Allow me to explain why;

I finally installed the Windows Service Pack 2 on my pc, and well... what can say, it completly screwed my computer. After the upgrade I as needed restarted the computer, and when I logged on, Explorer.exe wouldnt start, Task Manager wouldn't start, or anything else, I restarted a few more times, and I got "THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH" So, I had to reformat my whole C: drive and reinstalle windows, but then after I reinstalled everything, I realized... ALL OF MY AQUA STUFF WAS GONE, including the 2 new ObjectBar style that I was planning on releasing very soon... And then I realized something even more horible... MY MUSIC WAS GONE!!! ALL 16 GB OF IT...

man, that is self explanatory. before you reformat your pc you should backup all your personal data and stuff like that.

regarding the installation of sp2 that is case to case basis. you should alllow the installation to finish and you should quit all apps running before the installation.

though. if you hate windows as everyone here including me. you should switch to apple mac now. but that needed extra grands. :slant: :slant: :confused:

I agree, that was your fualt not Microsofts, and if you couldn't make up before installing a new os because you had no way of accessing the files all you had to do was install windows an a new partition on your harddrive and then copy your files over the the new partition, then use partition magic to delete that old partition (with sp2) and u know have all your files and xp sp1.

SP2 installation went perfectly for me. No issuses at all, if anything my performance is better.

and yah next time set aside all your important files or "backups" on another partition or a drive depends on you

the same thing happened to me. i was running xp sp1 then did the update to sp2. everything when wrong. lost over 20gb of my files. then...i came across partition magic and made several partitions just for storing my stuff. i back up all my stuff to dvd+rw as well at least once a day. just incase. never liked sp2 after that. i'm fine with sp1. it runs smooth. we all learn from our mistakes.

Watch and Learn!

In the future, you MUST partitionning your hdd. Minimal 3 partitions. In C: you must have ONLY the system, not anything else. The C: volume (partition or hdd) is the must FORMATABLE volume. In this you must have not important data. All important data included My Documents, Music, Videos, kits not yet burned on a CD, Aqua Stuff not burned yet must be keept in OTHER PARTITION. In a future when you may got a fatal crash, you can format your C: drive with no problem.

PS. Is better to have in other volume than C: a folder namely "Saved settings" or anything else in there you may save your @mail client settings (addresses, etc.), your chat client buddies and your internet browser favourites and all your own settings.

What a horrible history! You dont have to reinstall all windows but just replace the system folder! Any way is made and if you buy a apple you will forget it quickly, trust me!

happened to me too. i accidentally ereased everything because i thought that the instalation process was a repair of windows, so i went through the procedures just to find out that i accidentally ereased everything. i was so used to the ereasing partition and full instalation of windows and that so i just went my usual way without any backup whatsoever.

also in another booting fustration i slammed on my laptop keyboard and broke 3 keys.

no more excuses. people complained that the macs are expensive, no more excuses. for the mac mini. it's worth trying and everything. spending that 499 to try that computer sure is worth it

U should have pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del for windows Task Manager and then File>New Task (Run...)>Explorer.exe

Then your taskbar would have reappeared and maybe wouldn't lost all your data

But in the future if your explorer crashes, no need to reboot, just do that and it should be fine.

XP install will only erase/destroy other partitions if YOU tell it too during the installation process.

It cannot and will not do it on it's own. In fact it's impossible for it to wipe out any partition without the end users explicitly telling it to do so.

I know what it's like to loose valuable data. But failure to back it up prior to any major OS change, this includes SP installs, is only the users fault, not M$. They even tell you to back-up anything important prior to install.

And just an FYI for any future upgraders... remove any system file mods BEFORE you install SP2.

Also, SP2 can be uninstalled. Boot into safe mode, go to add remove programs and remove it from there. Just make sure you tell it to save (BACK-UP) files so that you can uninstall it. I know it eats precious HD space, but it does it for this very reason.

you could have saved your data before you reformatted. you could have tried loading explorer, running knoppix, or popping the drive in as a secondary one. and partitions should remain intact during the reformat. i've never had a problem.

also, you might consider slipstreaming sp2 and reformatting that way next time. slipstreams are better than udpates.

i couldnt back anythin up... cause i couldnt even boot in save mode w/ cmd after the blue screen o well, already downloaded like 500 megs or the 16 gigs of the music... my shareaza and overnet are loaded like **** right now, each has over 300 songs dloadin.. i just got kinda pissed cause many of those songs are bought...

This kind of situation is exactly why you should always have a Knoppix CD handy. You can back up your files and format without having to install your OS twice.

In the future, take your harddrive out of the computer, set it to slave mode (redo the pin configuration according to the HD model), plug it into your best friend's computer (that has 16+ GB free on it), and load their computer. Your harddrive should appear as an extra drive (say, drive X: ) and you'll be able to access and backup all of your data onto his harddrive or a large number of CDs.

sp2 no problems here I always install windows on a drive by itself and programs I dont care about everything else is on another drive. I love the mac it is very stable

SP2 will not install properly if you have spyware on your computer. The first time I installed it, I killed it. It wouldn't even get to a screen to give me a BSOD. However, yesterday, whilst trying to uninstall FlyaKite's pack to do something, I forgot I had patched my msgina.dll myself, so the uninstaller done something to it or other, and then Windows wouldn't boot again. So, I had to do a data recovery, and now I am back to SP1, but have all of my files, but the wrong user account, so a format is coming up soon, but I have backed up stuff. (On another note, it was not Flyakite's fault. It was my own doing.
