Broadband speeds?

Hey,

I have a DSL connection that can go up to 2mb or so download and 365kb or so upload. HERE is my speakeasy results. When i downlaod things the cap is usually 360kb per second. One time though i was able to download up to 600kb per second. Is there a way i can increase my download and upload speds more closer to the 2mb range?

When a connection is advertised at 2 mbps, that doesn't mean it downloads at that speed. Your 360 kbps is typical and great.

I just tried that site to test my connection, which is broadband through Cox.net. Here is the results for my connection. I get varied results for my connections, but it usually depends on the time of day which increases the demand on their system.

For plain old DSL, that's pretty good.

If it's VDSL or ADSL, you may want to have your provider check your connections wiring or the settings on the router/switch they provided.

DSL customers get a direct connection to the main switch and do not typicaly share their bandwidth with anyone.

I have a VDSL connection and currently get 1.2 Mbits up and down. If I give them more $$$ I can go faster, but it's ok for now.

Most download speeds will vary based on the site you're downloading from and it's capacity and not the actual connection if your on a A/V/DSL connection greater than 1 Mbit.

Cox uses the workgroup method. Your neighborhood is setup like a hub and they all share the same primary connection. If you have a lot of neighbors with Cox as their ISP, your bandwidth will drop as the number of them comes online. My in-laws and parents both use Cox and hate it at night when people are at home surfing. During the day when most are at work, their connections scream.

Cox also has this nasty habit of throttling upload speeds. If they detect a ton of traffic on a particular hub, they will throttle down the upstream speeds.
