DVD-RW Not Recognised

Hi There

I'm getting mixed problems with a new PC setup - Running an Asus K8V-X,

with an AMD64 2800.

a) When booting, the PC does not recognise the DVD-RW drive (a Samsung TS-H552B). This

can be rectified by altering a jumper on either the Hard Drive or

DVD-RW (e.g changing Master to Cable Select), however once the PC has

been turned off for a while then turned on again, the problem re-occurs

(then, you have to alter a jumper again).

On the occasions the above problem occurs, the PC does not shut down

correctly - even holding the front power switch for 6 seconds does not

shut the machine down - it has to be done via the switch on the power

supply.

Do you think this could be fixed by upgrading the BIOS on the

motherboard, or is it more likely to be a problem with one of the

drives?

Any help would be appreciated - I can give more info if needed

I had a similar problem when I got my Pioneer 108 DVD-RW. The mistake that I made was that I didn't put the drive in the correct IDE port causing blue screen of death before the system would boot windows from cold. My current setup is now this:

ide 0 0 [Primary Master]: Hard Drive --> ide 0 1 [Primary Slave] CD-RW [jumper set as slave]

ide 1 0 [secnodary Master]: DVD-RW [set as Master] --> ide 1 1: Empty

For some reason DVDRW like to be set as Masters.

Also you're going to have to make/confirm settings in your bios.

PS: The middle slot on the IDE cable is 0 [master] and the one on the end is 1 [slave].

Hmm - Tried changing that a few times (various combinations), but the problem remained. I've stuck a standard CDRW in and I'll see if that works - could be that the drive needs a firmware upgrade, or is faulty.

there should also be a jumper for 'cable select' (CS). worth a try...

Right - Firmware changed nothing, it's probably worse now!

I've stuck a CD-RW in there, and it seems that it's having exactly the same problems! This really isn't what I needed right now - I've had enought problems with that machine as it is!

Does this suggest that it could be a fault with the motherboard? (I hope not - I've already had a replacement one...)

Actually - could it be a problem with the power supply? - Maybe it can't supply enough power to the peripherals.....?! - It's only a 300w fella I think.

power doesn't sound like an issue? does the tray open when u boot up?

Again, it's hit and miss. On the occasions it does work, the tray opens fine - On the occasions it is not recognised it won't open at all. As I said before, for some reason, it only works after you've changed a cable or position, or a jumper - once you've shut it down for a while after the session where it was working, when you turn it on the PC doesn't recognise it.

Can anyone shed any light? :slant:

it may have a corrupt driver controlling it... try uninstalling the IDE channel it's assigned on, then reboot to allow it to reinstall itself...

or, have you recently installed a new burning software?

Basically, it's a brand new PC - The drive worked fine throughout the install of Windows Media Centre Edition, then it has been hit and miss afterwards.

How would I uninstall the IDE channel? - Bios?

to uninstall it, go into your control panel--system--device manager.... look for something like IDE ATA controllers. drill down that one and double-click on the channel the suspect drive is connected to on the motherboard (primary or secondary--usually the h.d. is on the primary, optical drives are on the secondary). click on the driver tab and there will be an uninstall button. i believe you will have to reboot at that point, when it starts up again, it will start up the 'found new hardware' dialog. i don't think you'll have to do anything yourself, it should set it up itself.

It actually does sound like a power issue to me. That would explain the randomness of the issue, and why the tray doesn't always work. Go get a 450w power supply, and see if it makes any difference.
