Aqua-Soft ForumsEveryone, I'm looking to take up some stuff to help the community, and for other reasons, I would like to take up some programming to help out with the Aqua emulation here, and to write apps to help out friends and organizations I am part of. I am thinking about Visual Basic right now. Would it be a good choice, or would C+ or C++ be better? What would be the best way to start learning it?

Visual Basic is almost useless until you get into API's, which are more in the advanced part of VB. C++ is the most common language you will see right now (There is no C+, it's just C 
). There are also many good books out there on it. I don't know of any off the top of my head, but I believe there was a thread about it a while back. I know many people that started with C++ and came out fine. If I were to choose, I would not have started with VB and go right into C++. You have more control in C++ and you won't be stuck on one platform like in VB world. Don't get me wrong, VB is not bad. But learning VB may get you in bad coding habits.
Of those three, I would suggest C++.
Edit - A site that I would recommend to get started with is Planet Source Code. Many beginners and advanced programmers explain many things in and of the main languages that you can learn. And also have examples so you can learn that way also. You will need to sign up for a free account, but I have been using it for years and have had nothing but good.

Pascal is for Wieners.
Isn't that what a hot dog is normally called? At least around here it is on the packages... I've heard of Pascal, actually I had a teacher that wanted to make me learn it, but we ran out of school days
i got bored one day and picked up vb 6 now im making apps. its pretty easy to learn, but like he said, you have more control with C++

hmm, are there any good, small C, C++ compilers? Right now my 'net speed is 12kbps, and I'm not sure which one to get anyway. Or VB6 compilers? I'm looking at that still as well. I will primarily be coding stuff for Windows machines anyway if that means anything. Maybe for OS X if I get a Mac Mini anytime soon.
