for that much money buy a mac dude! you could get a nice powerbook.
I do agree that Macs are quite sexy. However, I use my system not only for entertainment but C++ development also. So, I need to be completely compatible with the network at my office, and I need to be able to release Windows-only software from this machine.
i hate you for having enough money to throw away on a bigass lcd like that 
i think any of the two should be good enough. they both look beutiful. with that much money to burn, i think the cinema display should be hot. it's an apple product dude! but i should recommend 19 or even 17 inch because i don't think that such a big monitor can really affect and boost productivity. remember to always buy something you can really make the full use and benefit of, and if there is a good alternative that's 1/4 of the price and dosen't really affect you much, then you should use that alternative. bang for the buck is my law.

---i think that lg helps apple manufacture monitors because there is an article that shows that LG sells a monitor that looks exactly the same as apple's, but without the logo.
@steelfist - Thanks for the sage advice. Point well taken. I'm not really looking to increase productivity pre se. I'm really looking to get something that will be a "bigger" alternative for DVD playback. And, somewhat in the direction of productivity, I do a lot of Photoshop work and I'm an avid photographer of my kids (I may be biased, but my little girls are the most adorable kiddies in the universe!). Since the 23"-ers that I'm looking at run at a native resolution that equals that of my laptop (1920x1200), I wouldn't really be gaining any real estate, but the visual impact of a screen with an extra 6" of diagonal area is quite compelling.

ah.... leisure eh? sometimes people just by things just for that. nevermind. why buy a ferrari if you are in a place like new york where your top speed is 30 mph and average is 2mph because of constant traffic? there are reasons other than speed
with your "excuse" i think it should be ok. i don't do anything that needs such a cool monitor just to do my stinking project and homework.
I rather like both of those lcd's but I'd say go w/ the sony, cause the apps dispaly only looks pretty when standing next to a powermac. But if I'd be u i would just do what I did, get 2 20" flats and put them next to each other. the picture is even wider, and it costs about 1k less.
ide say go for a smaller lcd and then buy a powerbook 
that might be the alternative. buying two way cheaper lcds and having the same resolution and size. you can get it from sony or apple so the leisure and looks won't really go off.
Hmmm...Interesting suggestions on the dual-monitor setup. However, that would defeat the watch-ability (?) of DVD's, would it not? On the other hand, I used to have a dual setup when I worked in web design, and it was fantastic for keeping the main layout infront of me and having palettes and file access to the right.
So, I've got an "excuse," steelfist? Well, I suppose so...but afterall, I am still just thinking about it.
while i'm sure they both look great, you gotta get the apple. it's worth $2000 just for the bragging rights...

that'd make you king sh!t in my neighborhood! then again, maybe lcd's are the new cars. (hmmm...what's he compensating for with that super-large display...?)
erm i think you could fill up one screen w/ the dvd and play on the other screen
I would go for the Apple LCD...I'd definately make the purchase myself if I were you
OK, we'll see what happens - gotta get through the Christmas fever first (I'm also drooling over an O2 XPhone II...)
people have been reporting pink hues with these LCD displays and quite few have had the problem . I think both of them use the same LCD manufacture so technically they might basically be the same thing
