@Ludge: Bad day indeed, but it's frustrating how people seem to expect good applications with great features for free. I'm frankly sick of it. These people put god knows how much time into their work, and then they have the added strain of putting up with people who pirate/complain/don't follow instructions (I'm not just talking about this thread, obviously). People who pirate software from shareware/small developers/companies are quite literally stealing money from them. Just because an application isn't tangible, like a box of shoes/etc, doesn't make it okay to steal it.

@Dirtydog: Seriously just buy Shapeshifter. Any other way of using .guikit files is much harder and can potentially mess up your beautiful Mac. As seXXI said, Shapeshifter is only $20... I don't have a job and even I can afford it. You can either 1) screw up your Mac 2) have the peace of mind of using Shapeshifter

All I did was ask if there was a free alternative to Shapeshifter, as I am not familiar with what software is available for Macs. It's like a Windows novice asking if there's a free alternative to StyleXP (to change Microsoft visual styles) - there is, and it does everything SyleXP does.
After doing more research I realise the only way to install guikit themes is to use Shapeshifter.
Now for all I knew, there was a way to extract the contents of the guikit package and manually apply it. Obviously there isn't, but I didn't know that, hence asking the question.
Telling someone to 'get a job' just because they ask if there's a free alternative, or a way of manually doing something a $20 app does, is just downright rude and uncalled for imho. Just because someone has a job doesn't mean they necessarily feel happy to spend $20 on something that - for all I knew - could be done another way for nothing.

1 use ShapeShifter. Good idea, but i can't buy it couse i can't pay for it with credit card. I can pay cash - tell me where i can do it?
2 use free alternative. But somebody tell that free soft - is BIG enemy of devs... and i must pay a money for proggy i like.
3 search for warez - that IS AN ENEMY of devs!!! not free soft!!!
Ok, he had a very understandable concern that was is there a free alternative to Shapeshifter, why you jump to his neck i dont understand and quite franky, i dont want to.
If something like this happens again, i will be forced to hand suspensions. C'mon people, leave your petty crusades to yourselves or to those that are willing to put up with them.
It is normal to find free alternatives to programs (office vs open office) now, answer the question that has been asked or dont post.
I expect no replies on this matter.

You can decompile guiKits with guiKitty (unsanity.com) . Once this is done, you can use themepark to create a new theme and then import the elements from the decompiled kit and save the theme as a .dtla theme that themechanger can apply. However, themechanger can absolutely hose your OS since it modifys the actual OS framework. Shapeshifter interceps and redirects the API calls to the GUI so it doesn't replace files. Your mileage may vary with themechanger. I used to use it religiously until I borked a couple of installs. Then SS came out and I've never looked back.
