[question] How to change icons for (installer files) exe files?

Well as you all know when you download a program (an installer executable) it has some default icon. For instance the firefox 1.0 setup.exe has a box with a cd on it.

We all know that we all love os x icons.. and not these ugly icons that come with the installers.. is there anyway to override that icon and have it display an osx icon instead?

If you want all *.exe to have the same icon, you can add a filetype icon with the extension "exe". This will overide ALL executable file icons.

Or you can reshack them individually. Other than that, no I believe there is no other solution.

Reshacking each file individually is not an option.. I mean how often do you not download an .exe ? For me that's quite often so that would mean alot of reshacking...

So the best option would be to set a general file icon for .exe files.. but in iconpackager it doesn't seem to be possible.. I tried to add the .exe extension but it wasn't allowed.. so that leaves me to what options?

Anyone know what string to regedit?

I originally suggested the File Types tab (In an Explorer window, Tools -> Folder Options, File Types tab and add a New file type) but I just remembered, it doesn't work like that.

Maybe try IconPhile?

I remember some program, somewhere, that had the option to turn off EXEs using their own icons (like how you can make all ICOs have the same icon, or have BMPs show the picture). I am almost positive IconPhile lets you set the icon for EXEs.
