OK, This Is Insane

I can't help but post about this:

Someone is actually selling an Yu-Gi-Oh card on e-Bay for US $23,100!

My God, how insane can people go over something like this? I mean, please, this is just a card, a piece of paper! It's not something that may never be produced again, or a piece of gold! I could easily buy several other more useful things with that sort of money or donate it to people who need these money more! Goodness, what are people up to these days?

Sorry for the rant, but I feel like getting this off my chest.

Seriously, even some Yu-Gi-Oh players were saying that this card isn't that good. (I came across this while browsing another board, by the way, and the members on that board made those comments) Collectable? Maybe, but who knows, they may print more of such cards in the future, and the price will plummet. Also, I say, once this Yu-Gi-Oh fad passes, that card will be worth (at most) US $0.50.

With that sort of money, I could rather spend it on something more useful, or even donate it to charity!

man. once i sold a rare pokemon card for 10 bucks. a rare japenesse language charizard shiny. also i had the giovanni master card trainer thing and traded it for 5 cards that are very rare too. i don't see this as quite unusual, selling cards for like 100 or 200, but it's price is indeed a bit too high.

An utter, complete waste of money. I'm not one to force my own ideas about stewardship down other people's throats, but if you have the resources to just liberally throw that kind of cash towards something with no literal value, then perhaps you shouldn't have the financial advantage in the first place. That kind of money would put my kids through a couple of years of a good private school in my area, or buy them some NEW clothing for once...pay my medical bills, heat the house, buy groceries, and even have a little left over to give to others who need it. Shameful.

This is all JMHO anyway.

Seems like the bidding has ended. The winning bid was made by some heithandlauren at US $23,000! even though it is slightly lower than the previous price, however, it is still just way too high.

it's just irrational speculation, i suppose. they expect it to be worth something, they assume it will, so they buy it in the hopes that it will be worth something, and yet, most never even sell what they purchased. "it's worth x amount, but i'm keeping it because i know it's worth x amount." well, if you're keeping it, it's not really *worth* anything because it won't be value-determined until it's sold! until then, it's just a piece of paper on your wall!

they're living on 1) the possibility that it can be sold, and 2) the expectation that it is worth something more, neither of which matters here.

then again, they might just really really really really really really really like it.

that reminds me of another chinese story where this monk was teaching this guy about valuing life. he told him to take a rock to the marketplace and get some bids for it, and he had to do that several times. the moral was, he can't use the market to value life.
