People have had Background images in Explorer. How is it done? And does anyone have the pinstripe image that people are using for their background.
Background Image In Explorer
in 98, i think it was in folder options, i havent seen it on xp yet tho
This was already posted. You need to unhide the db file for that folder, open it with notepad and place a link to a background picture. I don't remember the specific format. This is for XP.
Yeah VM is right. You have to edit the desktop.ini in every folder you want modified. You have to be able to see hidden files and protected operating system file. (Go to folder options)
Clearly this takes a while to do every folder on your disk so someone made a program to edit the files for you ![]()

If that page doesn't work, ask me to mail it to you ![]()

ps. this is for xp, might work for 2k too but i don't have it to test.
this is also skinable in windowblinds. only downside is that you can't choose the backround that you want when you apply the skin unless you have skinstudio.
i thought that the background images were just a visual effect that could be enabled/disabled, in winxp that is.
Go to the folder "unhide system files"
open with notepad: Desktop.ini
You get this:
----------------------------------------------
[ExtShellFolderViews]
{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}={BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}
[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]
Attributes=1
IconArea_Image=D:\BMPs Folder\iPhoto.bmp
IconArea_Text=0x00000000
[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
-----------------------------
See the line:
IconArea_Image=D:\BMPs Folder\iPhoto.bmp
That tells it what picture to place as a background. It will tile automatically, so you need to create a white canvas of say 600x453 (depending on your resolution) and attach the image you want in the lower right. Save as a BMP and place it in some folder named BMPs Folder. If you use Photoshop you may want to make the picture 60-70% Transparent so it is a little muted, before you save it as a BMP.
Here is an example:

If you leave the line blank it goes to windows default
IconArea_Image=
Cheers
Don't use the Geocity program. If you reverse your settings with the program it will mess-up your default settings by wiping whole desktop.ini files for all folders
sh##, i didn't know that. i have to reformat so often i wouldn't notice.
I think its still worth it if you need to customize a whole drive and your sure you don't want to go back.

so...anyone got the pinstripe backround image?
when i open desktop.ini all i get is this:[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=C:\Documents and Settings\Karol Chudy\Desktop\Flarex's XP Stuff\OS X Icons\Folder Apple.ico
IconIndex=0 Why is that?
you could take a screenshot of this forum and crop it until you have a tiny little picture with a little white and dark stripe
Flarex
I was having the same problem after I used that program. Try copying and pasting the text above for the desktop.ini . Modify the path to the background image. After you save the desktop.ini then change the icon for that folder by going through Right-click on folder-->Properties-->Customize. Then close the window and re-open the window see if the background image took hold.
If not....Right-click on folder again--->Properties--->Customize
Look in the first (top) drop-down menu choose Pictures or Movies
close window again and re-open. I don't know why it takes all this sometimes for the background picture to show but that is how I fixed mine after using the above program which I don't recommend.
