[Preview] LCARS Avedesk Set.

I'm wondering if anyone here would like this. I'll messed around with the idea a bit and I've came up with this so far. I am hoping to add more widgets that will spicen up the desktop.

All the details of the shortcut/folder are displayed on rollover. Like the "Sub Routine" panel is really a shortcut for the folder in which I am saving my PSDs for this. On rollover it says the name and stats that I selected for it.

I wanted to make it display the name on the actual panel (were it says subroutine) but I have no idea if that is possible.

For all of you non Star Trek nerds out there  , LCARS is the operating system that they use on the federation starships. I've always thought it would be great to have it on my computer.

Sorry for the low quality picture. I have no hosting at the moment. I will host it at deviant art when I finish it though, so I will have better screenshots then.

probably not something i would use. but, it's a good idea and i encourage you to press forward.

It looks promising... I think it will be tough to have constant animations (light panels flickering) as does "real" LCARS panels look.

Great start though, keep up the good work

thats awesome, LCARS is so cool!

Err... I don't think the LCARS interface flickers at all. Cool idea, but one comment- the colors are good, but you need to lose the gradients. They aren't present in the LCARS interface on the TV show.

TNG LCARS uses pretty flat, pastel colors. They looked glossy due to the lexan covers over the display panels. The panels did "blink", depends on what it was used for.

Voyager starship was supposed to be an upgraded version of LCARS.

Used gradients and they did do more "blinking" than TNG.

Now let's find the real trekkie nerds.

Anyone remember what LCARS stood for?

#235257

Hehe, I think I used to know this one...

I know that TNG did not use gradients. I have the dvds, and they use gradients on the menus, and I though that really added a nice touch to the flat colors. As for Voyager, I didn't notice that they used gradients. I'll do some more research on that.

There is an example of one of the buttons. I have a gradient and a little cross pattern to add to it, make it look better.

I really want to do some kind of roll-over animations, but I'm not sure if thats possible, unless create a new desklet type.

Oh, BTW where is alist or collection of a lot of Desklets, because I only have the base ones, and iTunes.

#235463

To clearify, when I meant flickering, I meant a lot of blinking lights :P

Just did a google, LCARS = Library Computer Access and Retrieval System

#235469

That's cheating... I wanted to see if anyone could remember it without using google.

Anyway... I know there are some screenshots out there of the Voyager series consoles. I think they look much cleaner than the TNG consoles.

I'm sad to say that I haven't made much progress. I had exams this week, and tommorrow is my last, so I'll get cracking when I get home.

I just tweaked what I had done. Modified the Itunes desklet a bit and came up with a new idea for the buttons.

I made a base png with no text. I gave the label a negative value so it displays on the button. Cool hu? Well, it doesn't work that great. It only works on rollover, because the text draws first and then it draws the image (or so thats what I'm guessing) and it spazes out on rollovers alot, because if you go over the text it thinks that you are off the button, and then it blicks really fast. Any ideas for now?

I also made a little note area, but I think I'll work on it more, because it doen't exactly look like LCARS at the moment.

This is a little old (2003) but this was done for DesktopX a while ago. May give you some ideas. Think this guy tried to recreate every interface on LCARS :-s

Quite impressive if a little pointless. Funny thing is it includes all the sound effects also.

Edit - found his new in dev version. He is making a res independent version.

Man, this guy really puts his heart into this stuff.

Thread

Sorry to hijack your thread in this way, just wanted to give you some ideas for the Ave version, but I have to credit this guys work (Adam Solley), its very good.

#237699

No problems with the links. That is great stuff.

I don't really like how mine is coming out to much. I think i'll doodle a lot until I get something I like.

You may want to check out the re-designed LCARS interface used for the movie Star Trek: Nemesis aboard the Enterprise-E. They have a more, for lack of a better word, "aqua" look to them. Lots more blues. You may want to give them a look. Check out www.lcarscom.net for some good resources.

good idea!

#239101

For some reason, I can not get any of the videos off of Lcarscom.net, so I'm gonna watch the movie for that.

#239104

Blah!

I give up. I can't figure out how to make it look, so I'm gonna release what I have so far.
