[question] Taskbar up or down

after seeing all these screenshot i really want to give my desktop a makeover. i tried to move the taskbar ontop but soon find it strange and move it back down again. did any1 experience this? i think the part that i didn't like about this was that there were too many stuff on the top. i was thinking about giving objectbar a try so i "can add, file, etc..." on my taskbar. does it take up a lot of resources? last question is. Do you find it more convenient to have the taskbar up or down(do not consider the look). thanks.

The bottom seems more natural for me. Too cluttered at the top with all the other tool bars etc.

Boy. alot of questions you have.

Well, here's my opinion.

i tried to move the taskbar on top but soon find it strange and move it back down again. did any1 experience this? i think the part that i didn't like about this was that there were too many stuff on the top.

I have my taskbar permanently on top since about a year and I'm very comfortable with it myself. What do you mean by 'too many stuff on top'?

Is it the many icons on the taskbar? That I could understand.

Myself I don't like my taskbar to be too messy. I use True Launchbar to clean things up. And I must say I'm very comfortable with that. I use sub-menu's through this app (see attachment). Next to the minimise to tray option turned on in WindowBlinds and AveDesk on desktop.

The 'downside' of this combination is that I find no need for my dock any longer...

i was thinking about giving objectbar a try so i "can add, file, etc..." on my taskbar. does it take up a lot of resources?

Personally I find Objectbar quite hogging on the resources. The opening of menu's through OB I find lagging.

Besides the main program it also uses a secondaire proggy to display your tray icons and I don't like that.

Then again I happen to have a notoriously low sys specs myself, so probably that's partially to blame. We'll see how it will fare on my brand new socket 939 Athlon64 system by X-mas... ;)

That being said Crni's OB skins are truely marvelous to watch. Also I've read on these boards that a new OB should be on it's way soon which would include many improvements, so who knows? The fact of the matter is IMHO that true Aquaholics need to have a finderbar on their top screen taskbar. I love the fact that it enables the active window-menu's on the the taskbar by incorporating Menus into the bar and hide them in the program such as in the Apple os's.

last question is. Do you find it more convenient to have the taskbar up or down(do not consider the look). thanks.

Taskbar on top of the desktop for me is the only way to go.

You may call me a fundamentalistic deviant on this matter,

but I think one should put the taskbar on top out of principle.

Standard M$ XP install comes with the taskbar on the bottom o/t screen and the Luna skin enabled. We don't want that much an average John Doe, now do we? Nay, I say!

So personalisation of the OS for me is a must and starts with putting the taskbar on top and skinning the GUI be it with WindowBlinds like me (with rollup functionality and the minimise to tray mentioned above).

Hopes this helps.

Greetings,

Wiebeest

down for windows because if it's on the top, it's quite annoying having the taskbar buttons, window buttons, and the minimize/maximize/close buttons all in one area. sometimes i accidentally push the wrong button and it dosen't feel right. the taskbar is like the floor. without anything under it like a dock or taskbar, you kinda feel empty and falling. i just have this strange feeling that something's just not there to cheer me up when nothing's there.

i can`t even use taskbar unless it`s on top.

it just doesn`t feel natural to look down at it.

i know it might take some time to get used to it, but top of the screen is the way to go.

Also i use TLB but i still keep the dock for my most used shortcuts. Im` just too used to it :P

i like the taskbar at the top. it's a nice interesting look, and it frees up the bottom of the desktop for samurize, miranda, and y'z dock. it feels more natural this way.

I have my taskbar at the top of my screen, I find it much more convenient this way. First of all, I love YZdock and having YZDock and the taskbar all at the bottom at the same time is the most annoying thing in the world. And since I like to have my dock only at the bottom, I don't see any other place to put my taskbar than at the top!

What's more, I find it really esthetic to have it at the top, I think it's just a question of time, you may be used to the windows way to do, which means, having it a t the botto, but after you get used to it, you may realize that you prefer it much more this way. So just give it a try, and maybe you'll love it.

Finally, I want to add I find more convenient to have the three buttons min max close in the same area than the taskbar, so when I reduce a window, I can reopen another hidden window very quickly without having to go all the way down all the time. Thus I just leave my cursor at the top, and I can open windows, minimise windows and reopen them without having to move my cursor all the time to the bottom of my screen.

i see many ppl have "finder, file, view, edit, go, window, and help" on their taskbar and the menu on the other windows are taken off completely. what i want to know is wouldn't this be quite troublesome? like let say you're working with MS Words where they are other menu on the top. would you have to close down objectbar and fire it back up once you're done?

#232452

I switched mine to the top after I was working with a MAC at work and a PC at home. Now both my home and work PCs have it at the top. It has become vert natural for me to look up. I am also using the a dock on the right side.

Since I've modded my desktop, I have a thinner task bar which allows me to grip those window bars that have gone out of reach for most windows users. Also, give the auto hide feature a try, that way you will always be able to get those title bars.

#232457

I used to have it on top, but it's Windows, so it's on the bottom.

I also use two displays in a stacked configuration, not side-by-side.

That put the task bar right smack in the middle of my workspace since my primary screen is the one on the bottom.

But in reality, it all depends on what type of "look" or functionality you're trying to achieve.

There is not right or wrong place for the task bar.

At least with Windows you have a choice as to where to put it. Top, bottom, left or right or just hide the dang thing.

With OS X, you're stuck with having it on top, hell you can't even hide it if you wanted too.

Dude, OB replaces the active menu. When you open word that apps menu replaces the "finder, file, view, edit, go, window, and help" until you close word and it returns to the above state.

i used to use a dock and my taskbar was always up, but now i dont use the dock anymore so my taskbar is down.

as someone said b4 it feels empty down with the taskbar up without a dock

#235864

i've experienced it too , now i familiarized with the top taskbar and i just can't make the taskbar on the bottom

#235866

Yeah it's something you just adapt to. I run Sysmetrix along the bottom so I have bars on both edges, dock on the left. Gives a nice framed feel to the desktop :P

#235886

I like it really skinny on the side as well.

#235888

let me clarify what i just said. anything at least one thing on the bottom, and everything else on the top. if there's no dock on the bottom, then the taskbar will be on the button. if there's a dock, it will be on the bottom while the taskbar will be on the top. but i use objectbar so i don't really mind. but when i unload objectbar i don';t have to move it too much, so i leave it on the top even if objectbar's closed. every single computer that i have touched (except for these beautiful imacs and g5s) in the store are pcs, so i have to get accustomed to the bottom, which is MY default windows look. but i like the mac look a lot better, so it will be on the top.

#235903

ive had my taskbar on the top for some time now.

when i put it on the bottom, it doesn't last 2 minutes, i need my dock down there, it doesn't work on the top for me. the taskbar does.

as the normal windows user i always had my taskbar on bottom, i even used to use it double row for quicklaunch, address bar, etc. at first getting into the aqua modding i moved my taskbar to the top and had a little trouble getting used to it after having a natural reaction to move my mouse down to the bottom to change active windows or whatever. after having my taskbar at the top for a while i got used to, and eventually started using OB. Now its definately the first thing i do when i reformat, i cant stand the taskbar on the bottom. i highly enjoy ob+od.
