Hi, for the past week i have had to turn off my computer the hard way, holding the button for 8 seconds. I have windows xp sp2, and when i click turn off the desktop flickers and it doesnt do anything. the same happens when i try to log off, hibernate, standby and restart!
can anyone help?

Just curious...do you have Lavasoft Ad-aware? If so, if you are running Ad-watch, you will not be able to turn off your computer until the app closes...Until I had figured out that Ad-watch was the problem, I was not able to log off or reboot.
If this is not the case, I would suggest that you post this on the Tech Support Guys forum. They will be able to help you there.

What are the settings you have for hibernation?
Have you got any programs that might be "keeping" the pc alive even after the shutdown is pressed?
Disable the sound that plays when windows shuts down. If it contains errors
or is in any way damaged windows wont shut down.
lol im amazed at all the things that just go wrong with my computer. I actually do have Adaware on and i think adwatch is enabled, i will check that. Last week after i clicked turn off twice, it tried to end explorer and did that fir a few days.Pops, it is impressive to see all that happens to your computer... it is as if it is doing it on purpose.

EDIT: Bazooka scanner picked up DIDer, PowerScan, SideFind, and Windir.csrss. any of these viruses causing the problem?

Try reading the virus data files online and see what they yield. And regardless of whether or not they are causing the problems, it will still be advisable to remove them anyway.
And yes, Spysweeper is great. 
If you have AD 1.2, close that...the earlier versions had a bug that prevented shutdown.
And, of course...Virus scan/spyware scan would be good.
