[help]Are ipod docks backwards compatible?

Well my girlfriend informed me that her sister got her an ipod dock for her for christmas. The issue is that she has an ipod mini, and this is a G4 ipod dock thats comeing in the mail. Now I have a G3 10 gig ipod and i was wondering if that would work with a g4 ipod dock. Unless the sized and connections of the new ipods are different I wouldn't think there would be an issue. I know my ipod uses the same firewire plug the mini's use. So im hopeing its the same size.

After looking threw the net i coudln't find anything. So i was wondering if anyone here would know.

Thanks

4G (not G4 :P) docks are somewhat thinner, but its a matter of milimeters. I wouldn't think it would matter if it were a 3G or a 4G, but as I've never tried it, I don't claim this is absolutely true.

Its not about fitting in the dock gene, its about compatability.

I know for sure that 4G's dont work in 3G docks, and I would think that it'd be the same the other way around. The reason? Clickwheel.

It said so right on the Apple Store page:

Supports new iPod with Click Wheel (20GB or 40GB) only. For an iPod Dock accessory kit for prior generation iPod with Dock Connector, use M9130G/A iPod Dock kit.

what if i just wanted to use it to dock to my pc. not to like play music threw a sterio.

AND do the docks require softwear to work? if they dont id probably have a better chance.

i just went to apples website and saw they have 2 differnt types. ones for 20-40 with click wheels and ones without click wheels. so im guessing that the with out ones are backwards compadible.

edit: well i wasn't sure untill i got it. but i hooked up my new dock and it works fine. so yes they are backwards compadible, as long as u have the right one (click wheel/non ckick wheel).

and yes i did get it early for good behavior.
