[question] best dvd burning programs

hey guys,

I'm looking for a good dvd burning program to back-up some of my dvd's onto dvd-r's. I"m pretty new into the whole dvd authoring and dvd-backing up scene, so pardon me if I sound like a n3wbie (I am, lol).

so far I"ve tried cyberlink's powerdvdcopy, but it keeps crashing on me. I've downloaded dvd shrink, but haven't tried it yet. I'm also interested in clonedvd but am not sure how that would fare. do any of you have any suggestions? I would like to get rid of some subtitles and things in other languages so I can get a better picture quality on the dvd backup

i just started doing it myself and here's some tips i can offer:

1--GOOD MEDIA!!! make sure you get blank discs that are good quality, and not made in Taiwan (renowned for making bad blank discs). and just because you've heard of the brand doesn't mean squat. e.g. verbatim and tdk are horrible discs. get an app called DVDInfo to find out the media ID of the disc. look it up on this site to see where it ranks:

(TDK +R discs i initially bought have the id CMC which as you can see from that site is 4th class media, garbage)

if you're in the U.S., a brand that worked ok for me was Spin-X which can be found at Office Max. (just had a sale last week, $15/50 discs... was there yesterday $8 or $9/25 discs)

DVD shrink is a great program... i've been using it to backup all of my stuff and it can do everything you want (get rid of subtitles, etc.). a few times, though, i found it to now be able to read a disc. in cases of that, use dvd decrypter to back up the whole disc to your hard drive. then use shrink to backup and get rid of what you don't want. (need lots of h.d. space to do all of this, though!)

EDIT-forgot to mention, when you use shrink, in my experience, if the compression is less than 80%, use the option Deep Analysis and error compensation... i have noticed a difference. when the compression has been over 80, i haven't seen too much to warrant the extra time it takes.
