If you have gmail, but don't have a POP option yet, wait a few days...it takes a while to spread it to all accounts. I just got it a few days ago, and it's great!

ALL Mail providers do this, even your ISP. Google is no different.

The only thing you could do to prevent this is run your own SMTP/Mail server, but even then, the mail can (a) be intercepted by your ISP (everything has to go through them) and ( intercepted by whomever you send it to. If you email a guy with an ISP, hotmail, gmail, etc, etc account, then they have your mail anyway.

Email is not secure.

I use mail.app, it never asks for my password. Make sure you have SSL turned on for incoming and outgoing pop&smtp.
