[help] what is the best free antivirus software

what is the best free antivirus program out there now?

i have three options right now.

i used to use avg antivirues, but on the day i posted this, i started using avast 4.0 software. the problem with these two programs is it dosen't have scheduled scaning, which i loved on my very old pccillin 2002 program which i still have now, but it can't clean anything. only detects, and can't delete.

if you guys can point me out which program's better at detecting, using low system resources and cpu load, and better protection, please share your ideas.

also, if you have a good antivirus program that i didn't list yet, please link and reccommend it.

the reason why i posted is because of the fustration of programs not always having everything i want. avg has good detection, but it can't clean unless i do a seprate scan. i like pccillin because it can detect it, and clean/quarentine immediatly. it's very convenient, but it has crappy protection and cleaning and detection. avast, right now is fine, but dosen't have scheduled scaning, which drives me nuts.

my gf uses avg and she seems pretty happy with it. i use symantec corp. edition (what my school issued us) and it's fast, but obviously not free. i'm just telling you so you know i'm not an authority on free av.

i hear nod32 is very good and light (but not free). i'd try them all out and see what you like most. i'd also check the frequency of app/virus definition updates. the higher the better.

i use bitdefender now, the free version... it works fine except it's annoying how often there is an update to their definitions... that's the trade-off, though, annoyance vs. protection. i've read a review that compared many of the free a.v. apps and it does offer one of the best protections

i used antivir before that, it was fine. i only switched after i read that review...

last week i tried avg before and it has two issues. it cannot clean, quarentine or delete as soon as the sheild detects it, and it cannot clean or delete and quarentine that successfully.

avast has good sheild and stuff, but it's a hog on resources and cpu, and it has poor detection. dunno what to do now.

I have used AntiVir for 2+ years now and have no complaints. Never had any virus problems, always detected anything stupid i did or opened and fixed it. Daily updates usually, small nice and friendly. I would definitly recommend it.
