[help]Wireless Networks in a Student Home

Hi Boys and Girls, Ladies and Gentlemen of this great Aqua-Soft board, now I am sure you have far more knowledge about networks than me so I appologise for seeming stupid but I do have a few questions to ask.

1) Which Wireless products would you go for in setting up a wireless network in a student home?

2) Where would you get them from? e.g. ebuyer.co.uk, scan.co.uk, overclockers.co.uk or even dread the thought pcworld (the actual shop)

3) Does the router or access point have to be linked up to a computer so you can access the ADSL modem? (since we only have one telephone socket and with the space provided it would be rather inconvient to put a computer there)

I've not got time to answer those questions just yet (I'll be back later!), but I have one important comment:

Check the terms and conditions for your uni's network or provider.

Here at imperial, if you set up a wireless network attached to the internet, via their network and don't submit to a security check and registrations, they kick your room off the data service and won't let you back on.

ok first off let me say that you're an idiot for posting that disclaimer and that I want to flame you soooo bad for that.............but I won't.

Back on topic:

1) I would recommend that you go with a Linksys networking product.

2) I would honestly recommend you buy from a shop. So that if there's any problem with the device itself you can go and return it.

3) No, the router can be hooked directly to a DSL modem.

From my experience, an Airport Extreme Base Station has 3x the range and speed of a Linksys G Router.

ebuyer has always been reliable for me. scan today only always has some good deals, but sods law dictates that nothing will be there the day you want it.

don't really know too much about networking myself, am currently trying to unbreak my wlan here.
