[release] Fade In / Out Effectlet

Again in my course of a more lively desktop.. I wanted to have some of these fella's pop up and play with their red somatic friend. Some strange somatic dimensional thing I suppose :)

So I wrote this quick little effectlet which will fade a desklet it from whatever starting point you specify to full Alpha, and then fade away again.

Just unzip, place in your Effects directory and apply to your desklets (Avedesk may need a restart to see it).

Avedesks Preferences with effectlet is a bit tricky to handle. If you don't want icons to complete dissappear you should be able to use this as well.

When you first apply your icon will essentially dissappear. go into Prefs and fix the starting Alpha and roll over where the icon used to be. Roll over a few times to get things started, if need be, manually edit the alpha to find your icon again.

The best way in my experience to adjust the "SPEED" is to adjust the "Amount of Alpha" not necessarily the Ticker Speed.

It's quick and dirty but I thought it may be useful for others. If you adjust the speed, minimalists may be able to have quiet desktops which come alive on roll overs. neat ideas. I should experiment :)

cool stuff nice idea! thanks optics

Very nice - this is ideal for my minimalist desktop with minimal clutter :)

One suggestion would be that we could have text boxes to enter the numbers - as I have lots of desklets and I like them all to match - and that drag bar is a bit fiddly.

Great and fresh idea, finally someone did something new for Avedesk :)

Great but a small problem !!!!!

Great but a small problem !!!!!

Ave sent me a PM with some suggestions. I'll be posting it with his updates for that CPU fix shortly!

Just for the record - here it runs just fine (takes 1-4% off my CPU during the fade in/out process - depends on the Desklet -> Advanced -> Quality setting) and I even have the speed set to 1 (which is supposed to be CPU intensive). Configuration: P4 3ghz w/ HT, 512mb ddram.

I have another problem tho, the label of the desklet doesn't fade out completely when I mouse out of the desklet area. It stays, let's say, on 40% visibility. Next time I mouse in it fades out a little more (let's say to 10%) while the desklet icon fades in. And THEN, when I mouse out again, the label finally fades out completely.

Well... I hope I managed to describe it well enough :slant:

']Avedesks Preferences with effectlet is a bit tricky to handle.

If you have troubles with effectlet preference handling, please do tell - I have some other things on the stack and could refurbish these to your needs for AveDesk 1.2 - be prepared to be able to assign / unassign effectlets per script, pick skins among other things.

*Updated ZIP to fix CPU on some machines based off of Ave's suggestions

Herd: I have noticed some quirky behavior on effectlet preferences which I'll PM you with tomorrow when I get some time. Hopefully I can send you some sample script effectlets.

Yes, you did. I have a similar but different issue when I apply it to desklets that have labels. My original use of it didn't involve labels. Interesting!!

My first impression is that it may be a bug with AveDesk, but I'll look to see if I have any control over it.

Confirmed bug, and has been fixed in the code for the 1.2 version as you can see here [ http://mpj.tomaatnet.nl/clip0044.avi ].

I totally love this effectlet btw, great job.

hehe well he's the man and there is no doubt as to his skills and excellent piece of work: AveDesk and the ave apps.

anyway I'm glad ya'll like the effect.. Ave has pointed me to the right files so that I can begin working on my next effect which will be a c++ effect not an effectlet... will be some time though

I just got this and it's eating up my CPU up to 50% (HT) even when not fading in and out! What's going on?

#348278

Does anyone have the CPU usage problems? RGGHh

It is happening with only some desklets though. Namely the stickypad, the weather, and the IP.

#348326

Nice, using it now.

Thanks.

You'll need to run register.bat or "AveDesk.exe /RegServer" to register AveDesk's COM part, which is used in the scriptlets.

#348740

simple but great !

nice done dude & and thx for sharing !

#348876

So no one wants to help me w/ the CPU usage issues I'm having when adding this effectlet to some desklets like the notepad?? Remember, I get 50% usage even when no hovering over!!!
