[request] ProgramLauncher

After looking at the Mac OSX favourite software thread here at AS i noticed that almost

everyone there mentioned a certain program launcher as one of their fav apps for OSX so i

started looking for an alternative for Windows. Unfortunally what i found i didn`t like much.

So i thought of a nice lilttle app that would have the best functions while still keeping it

simple (and hopefully a small resource footprint). I`ve wrote a ProgramLauncher

Specification and made a mockup of the prog and its CP.

ProgramLaunch Specification

ProgramLaunch would be an application that would sit in you taskbar and would be invoked

either by a user-definable keyboard shortcut or a click on its icon in the taskbar (or possibly

tray icon).

When invoked it would display a menu containing shortcuts for the applications/folders that

user would add in the Control Panel.

Also it would feature "Find as you type" for faster navigation.

Icons and program/folder names would be editable.

Icon would be prefferably be a png file (with transparency supported) (later maybe even a

feature to choose icon and font size?, for now it would use system settings for fonts and a

16x16 icon size )

In the later versions a feature of sub-folders would be also aviable.

Program icon in taskbar/tray would be user configurable.

I made a mocup of the prog and its control panel based on several program launchers i

found for Mac OS X. I'm not a GUI deisgner and i know that the CP might look bloated but

it`s basically a display of options i`d like to see in this program.

If anyone`s willing to take a shot at this i`m sure that members of this community would be

more than welcome (i know i certinally would be :) )

Hmm ... I think it's the worth to be developped

I just put all my favourite apps into folders in Menu Start, customized icons and linked it in the dock and in Objectbar. I can't see anything special enough in your specification that would make this app worth to be developed. IMO.

Beacause my startmenu is overloaded and i don't like when my dock is too charged.

EDIT : nevermind , kkmenu do this well

I think its cute =) Definatly worth developing, and it would be cool if the menus

were skinnable like in KKmenu. Even better if you could have multiple menus and

submenus with different icons (Or plain text, that way you could make a finder

bar out of it). This has lots of potential. I hope it works out =)

I WANT IT!! RELEASE IT!! NOW!! NOW!! NOW!!

IS THIS READY YET?! I WILL DIE WITHOUT IT!! WAITING WITH BAITED BREATH.

AAAAUURRRRGHHHH, I NEED IT IN THE NEXT 10 SECONDS OR I WILL EXPLODE!!!

;) i got it out of the way so no one else has to now

the key is hotkey activation of the menu and "find as you type" ;)

it would be faster to run Firefox by pressing win+p (to activate the prog), start typing fi.. (it would point to "FireFox") and then press enter.

Anyways it`s just a suggestion :)

PS i also hate Start Menu :/

PPS If nonone wants to do this can at least someone sugest a viable alternative?

#225883

with that feature, wouldn't it have to be indexing the drives at all times? thus, you're now talking about it being on all the time, utilizing resources in the background... just something to consider...

#225897

u misunderstud me

it would "fin as u type" only in the same matter as windows does it in explorer.

like when u open a folder and u want to go to file named "wookie" u start typing wookie and it focuses on that file.

#225906

oh... i thought you meant you type in a search box a name of a file and while you're typing it's bringing up all of the matches.

and quit looking at my files...

Somehow this reminds me of true launchbar

#225927

that`s a nice alternative but it looks bloated (as i said simplicity is what makes OSX launch programs stand out) and i wouldn`t use 1/10th of its options.

but thanks for the info :)

So butler for PC :P

A suggestion I have for a viable alternative is Runfast. It doesn't index (sounds like you don't want that) but is entirely user configurable, and only takes up 220k. Finds as you type your predefined programs and commands, uses a user-configurable hotkey, and has the option to be in the tray or completely hidden. The only thing it isn't is skinnable, which saves on the footprint. I find it absolutely indispensable for Windows - if they would only port Quicksilver!
