Mac OS 8.1 woes

Hey,

Well i have this mac, it's got Mac os 8.1 on it and im screwed. I need OS 9.2 to even install to panther. I have a Mac Os 9 disc, but it's in iso format. so i thought, sure i will try to burn it and view it on the mac. so i burn it and put it in start the mac up and double click on the cd icon and there is the .iso, so i double click on that and it gives me a couple errors about carbonLib not being installed. I havent tried to boot with the Cd yet but i have a feelingthat that would be pointless. Can anyone help me? I really need panther on this system, i already got the upgrade cd's.

thanks,

Pops

You need to upgrade your current OS 8.1 to 8.6 before attempting an upgrade.

Download 8.6 here

I recently overhaulled a 1st edition G3 green/white and managed to put 9.2 on it but it ran like a ****. I didn't even bother going all the way to OS X as it would have fallen over.

Run Software update as I'm pretty sure you need to run a firmware update to be able to run 9.x.

You'll need to install via the CD so when you restart hold down C and boot up.

I hope this helps...

Actually i found out that i need to upgrade to 8.5 before 8.6. then i have to buy 8.5!!!!!!!! this is so crazy! i need 8.5 so i can get 8.6, and then install 9.2 so i can get 10.3. ugh

well my mac has os 8.6 but i got it from a friend who gave me a copy of his hdd on cd (yeah he didn't have much stuff on it at the time since it fit on one cd) but try booting off the osx cd. it might work. it did when i installed 10.3 in pearpc. as DoubleD said hold c before it says "Mac OS" with the osx cd in the drive to boot it. i hope i helped.

Well my friend let me borrow his version of mac os 9.1, i have 8.1. now i guess i need to know how to upgrade. (by the way the install disc is in french!) i put the disc in, held c, it booted off ther disc. i run the installer and it says in french "select drive" but there is no drive!! when i try to install with no drive selected it yells at me in french and gives me an error. i know it is possible to go from 8.1 to 9.1 but i need a little help.

thanks!,

Ok Pops you may have to give me a few days but I think I can get your solution.

I've dug out this list on the web of what machines can run what...

Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One – 8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 8.6, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2.1, 9.2.2

Power Macintosh G3 – 8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 8.6, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2.1, 9.2.2

Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) – (8.5 if included when purchased), 8.6, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2.1, 9.2.2

It looks like you can't buy 8.5 any more but also you can't obtain it free/shareware yet. Which causes a bit of a problem.

With regards to the 9.1 disk, does it give you the option for fresh install?(bit difficult in French I know) because you should have the option to flatten the drive, which would then prep it for 9.x.

If not then you may need to use the 8.x disk tools to format your drive, then run from CD that way. Its alot of messing around and I wouldnt recommend it unless you know what your doing! But at the same time - depends how desperate you are to get on to OS X.

As I said - leave it with me and I'll see what I can find out for you.

sounds liek a plan, i responded to your pm btw

new problem, thanks for the off Double D, but now i have more troubles :)

(using xpostfacto3.0b9)

when i first put the panther disc in to install, i got the X "restart" to install. so i clicked it and it restarted, but never booted up. so i manually restarted and held down c. Igot the pointer and right when it was about to show the mac osx boot window, the system restarted! I can get into 9 if i dont have the CD in the drive. so i went into 9 and put the CD in, and guess what? The CD wouldnt show up! so i dont know what to do now!

#226874

what program did you use to burn the cd?

#226941

FIRMWARE!

make sure you've got the OS X AND 9.x firmware updates - available from the apple site.

#226962

well there is firmware updates for the powermac g3 but thewy dont apply, since i dont have A SCSI drive. also, i cant start the machine anymore, just gives me back screen ughhh, trying the cuda switch.....
