Personally I think its a complete waste of technology we have enough devices to display photos including the camera itself and since it dosnt display album art I dont think Id ever use the photo feature but a colour screen is a nice change so Im gettin one

It's still a white iPod (unless you get the U2 one, Jaguar, Colorware, or whatever else), and the screen is now in color and it's basically the 4G iPod with more. Personally I just want a U2 one, that's all I really need to listen to right now, seeing as they might cheer me up after all this crap going on with my PC.

I have a 4G and I don't regret buying it at all. I bought the thing to play my music and it still does exactly that. I never wanted to view pictures on my mp3 player in the first place. Besides, this new product costs more, weighs more, and is thicker than what I have. Personally I see no reason to complain here, plus I really don't think this is a particularly useful combination (pictures and music that is).
And to make you feel better, iPod photo does not play videos. So you can imagine there will be another one in the following months with the capability to do so. At least that would be logical since Apple is going with the whole multimedia thing.
This is a very bad business strategy. Make "generations" of iPod every 6 months and keep it a secret and by doing that, dissapoint people that may have bought iPods recently. Then just all of a sudden announce it, and expect those people to carve up another $400 (or whatever it is), and act as if everybody has an extra 400 bucks to spend on (it looks to me now) useless hardware. Not to mention the ridicilous price for a drive and a mini LCD screen, as someone had noted before.
And to the color-rebelious people; come on! iPods haven't been just white for a long time. How 'bout iPod Mini? Or are they not "iPod enough"?

and what happened last year.. the 3G absolutley flew and you couldnt find one anywhere. This year you have the choice of a 4G iPod a mini one a U2 one and now a colour one. Apple are going to have another fantastic 4th quarter.
The timing is a bit unusual and especially the surprise launch but the 4g and mini have been out a while now there arnt a great number of christmas sales left. This release is the big step needed to make all those pre 4g owners upgrade to the latest model. Lets face it Im a 3g owner and its made me upgrade.

What people are saying, though, is that it's bad business to release an update to a product (4G iPod), have senior members of the company publicly state that they have "no plans in announcing 60-gigabyte models" (ok, yes, the use of the word "announcing" could be taken to mean that they were doing stuff, just not announcing it soon), and then, a few months later, supercede these models. Ok, maybe it's only gonna piss off geeks (like me) who waited for 4G, in the hopes that Apple would release a 60-gig colour-screen'd iPod. It's still bad business sense, though, to alienate the early adopters - the people who the masses tend to use as the "measure" for whether or not a product is as good as it's advertiding.This is not bad buissness [sic.] or wrong timing.
Completely agree, but it just makes those of us who did buy 4G feel like we were being sold a stop-gap. 4G? Out "a while"? 19th July is just over 3 months ago! 3G - 4G was a gap of 15 months, with all changes in that time being capacity-centric (save the "mini", but that's a different product line). What's really, really, incredibly sad is that I'm actually working out the best way for me to get a 60-gig colour as we speak. I'd be surprised if I haven't upgraded my 4G to a photoPod by February. Steve Jobs has rejected idea of video iPod. He said, that you can't watch video at odd moments, unlike listening of music.
LOL this thread is so funny. I feel so happy now because even if i support apple, i don't buy much stuff. 1-2 at all. so, i don't need to say GOD DAMMIt, and also i still don't buy it. at least it's better than apple not improving at all you know.maybe if apple has some trade in program that can let you send your 3rd gen ipod with 30 bucks and have a 4th gen ipod with exactly the same price as when you bought the 3rd gen ipod. or something like that.
that would be very money saving.
