IB Students, come and chime in!

Hey everyone!

After seeing that GnomeXP and Kompile are IB students (kompile graduated) just like me, it made me really happy to be part of such a "Real" international educational system. It is not really common to find IB students, so im interested in knowing who is one (or was).

Graduated with IB Diploma 31 Points (2 points short from Harvard, i am a twat that will never forgive himself)

As I stated earlier, my High School is small and relatively new to IB. Because of this, the courses I am taking are the ONLY ones available.

Still a great program, though!

thanks, seph. my teachers were worried because i wasn't studying, and i know i should've prepared more. i ended up with varied scores on my exams.

we should also mention what work we did. my tok paper was about "dualism" and its insufficiencies as a heuristic model for understanding mysticism, philosophy, and quantum physics.

my extended essay was on the various ways of intuition and knowledge-acquisition, focusing on science and religion. i argue that their marriage is not only effective, but necessary.

some of my friends in university went to a high school that focused only on ib, so they had students doing research and scoring 40s. one of them scored a 7 on every test taken, 3 bonus points, and extra points for a "special" curriculum. now THAT'S insane.

but then suddenly ib didn't really matter much anymore. all the test questions were pretty much the same anyways. now that i graduated from university, i'm getting really serious about philosophy, much more than i was in high school.

WOW!!!!

Man, what school was this!?!!? i got the highest mark in my class and i got 31 o_O granted... My school was also very new to IB, 2ng IB graduates batch, actually.

My TOK paper was on Perception (they actually gave us some topics we had to choose from, not that cool).

My Extended Essay was on "Artificial Intelligence vs Natural Intelligence" and all its implications. I loved my philosophy class

Question, being an American in St. Louis, we are not exposed to many of the British scientific terms needed for the Biology test (our school's low point). Does anyone still have their notes? Many thanks in advanced!!!

@seph, not my school. it was united world college (uwc) in singapore, an intense private boarding school that was hardcore ib. i just went to a private international school that had ib/ap, but focused on other things as well.

yeah, i didn't like how tok was so restrictive, but it was fun nonetheless.

and your papers sound interesting! more interesting than mine, actually. it sounds like you would've (or could've) gone into cellular automata, turing, godel and axiomatic systems, biology, etc. man, that's an ambitious paper!

now that i look back and re-read them, i'm not impressed at all. my recent papers are much more impressive, to me anyway. i'm currently planning out a paper on the ego and the constitution of consciousness.

@gnomexp, sorry, i didn't do biology. hardcore mathematical physics was my interest! but you know, the school should have tests from previous years. doing those tests is one way to prepare.

i didn't take any ap tests. i took a look at the math and economics exams, and they were a joke (at least the ones i saw). i hope that didn't sound arrogant, but it was the general contention at my school that ap is much easier than ib.

some of my friends took the ap economics exam (after being in the ib econ. class), scoring 5's. they said it was "freaking easy."

I did go a bit into cellular patterns and synapsis representation algorithms, my EE controller told me to shut the physics guy inside of me and carry on on the philosophical side or i would have had to change the subject of the EE... but as you said, i look at it now and.. meh, i think its very bad hehehe...

I had a chance to do IB, but didn't feel like it. The schedules were too restrictive. I will take IB Computer Science though, and am currently in AIM Science, English, and Global Humanities.

i really liked ib. it was fun, and exciting, but i wish we had more freedom over some topics.

e.g. the teacher chose numerical approximations or something like that for our special topic in hl math, which is fine and dandy as the taylor series is useful, but it's not as interesting as say, the special topics about group theory or logic.

ib is amazingly useful for university, though. i was awarded 8 credits (they only counted hl exams) that counted for my total credit requirement, so i was able to graduate a year early. plus i got to skip the lame intro. classes.
