It has to do with shell32.dll. I'm not sure which is the size (in pixels) of a thumbnail folder but, let's suposse you got an *.ico archive in the following sizes:

128x128, 96x96 ... 32x32, 16x16 (you got the same image several times)

If the thumbnail folder size is 96x96, what you got to do is edit (or create from scratch) the *.ico file and replace in it the 96x96 image. This image must be self-created since the thumbnail icon does not exist in OS X icons I believe). You can do this with GIF Movie Gear.

I recall flyakite made a really good looking thumbnail folder, included in his/her system files (which he/she did not realse, di he/she?).

See you

Using Reshacker open up the shell32.dll file its icon #27&28. Or Icon Group #4. The icon size is 96x96. Im baseing this on a SP1 file.
