Where have all the Software Hauses gone?!

Last night at 4 am I was wired to the wall and bored out of my mind. So I went looking for software sites. To my dissappointment the only websites I could find were huge freeware archives.

What the heck happened to freeware websites (hauses, if you will) will their own sizable collection of programmed software?!

545Studios - Dead

Hydra Software - Dead

The huge collection of Aqua software from here - Dead

Just a few examples. I understand about the aqua software situation which transpired here, but why are there no more sites like those we used to visit so frequently?!

I'm assuming that the market for new apps is closing as long as the major operating systems have been out, for Windows atleast.

I still look forward to the likes of shell extension city to point me to new software.

I unfortunately missed the boat in finding out about sites such those mentioned. I'm only now hearing about them in the past tense. :-(

I also keep watching Virtual Plastic for great smaller releases to help solve minor annoyances with a few real gems. ContextAware comes to mind, from Grigri.

I joined in this game during what seemed like the waning of free software sites.

The more active area seems to me to be in alternate shells, plenty to look at over in that realm. If you're into that.

To sum up, I can't help you.:( I only know of skinning sites for current software.

Topic Moved.

This is best suited to Cross Platform Software, methinks.
