Is There No Need To Costomise Windows Anymore?

Mac OS X Panther (or next relese) for a PC X86? Apple has already accomplished this with Darwin x86, but now Darwin is carbonized! Oh, My GOD!!! I can't wait! By the way, if installing on a normal x86 is not possible it could be easliy emulated with a ROM. Keep in mind that Apple will bump up the requirements. Probably because G4 and G3 data pipelines on Mac architechure is double the intel P4 (or thats the Mac OS X way of using the G4). but still I think 500 or 700Mhz would be enough to get you started.

Just because they switch to an Intel chip is doesn't mean they are going to consider allowing people to run MacOS on non-Apple hardware.

Pay attention though to the details, if they switch to intel it will be a 64-bit processor. Right now there are more apps available for Mac than Itanium or any other 64-bit processor (hammer, sparc?), unless you are running a data center. I doubt that you skin your datacenter servers though

the cost of these things if they switch to intel is going to be comparable to current apple hw if they license out the os other hw vendors at all... they won't by the way. Whereas M$ makes it's money on licensing fees, Apple needs those hw dollars. and they need to control the hw architecture so that they can continue to keep a stable OS. so you might as well just buy the apple hardware. the idea of skinning/modding is to have a *cheap* mac look/feel.

On that note, think how stable windows would be if M$ designed/manufactured and controlled all the hw. think xbox - does it crash?

Oh, I didn't know it was just for 64Bit. I would do just about anything to see a PPC emulator that didnt require me to spend 200-300 $ for a damn G3 or G4 add in card, and required me to use Linux PPC. I guess the only way to use a Mac is to buy one, Which is hard for a 15 year old to do... oh well ill buy an ibook before I buy a car. I was also hoping Darwin was the answer to my prayers, but no... the CD wouldnt boot on my computer. Then i leaned it was just a mear GNU GUI with no carbon GUI.

Good point, let's remember that Apple switching to Intel does not mean that it will run on a off the shelf motherboard with a PC chipset.

Apple though might feel the heat from Linux too. And I think that at this point Photoshop ( Adobe suite if you want) is the only think that keeps Apple in business.

I have researched some pages on the web yesterday, and it looks like Adobe it's very sure about not releasing any Linux product, therefore Apple might still have a chance of survival.

But remember that regardless of the eye candy it will be hard for Apple to convince people that is a better choice than a dirty cheap PC board running a stable Linux. And this days Linux starts to look darn well. It has windows shadows, it has native png icons, font smoothing, etc.

And if a team of developers - so common in the Linux community- will think one day that it will be cool to produce a zoom effect on the desktop icons and a fluid minimizing window effect, then Apple's aura will certainly begin to fade.

The bottom line is that Apple is just a smaller Microsoft. It was smart enough to employ a marketing strategy tuned towards eye candy , and it paid off, it survived so far despite running twice slower than a PC and costing 3 times as much ( big price to pay for some shadows , gel buttons ans smooth stripes).

But I think that Linux is the next big thing, and I think that Gimp can run Photoshop plug ins. Cool, huh ?

Thanx for the explaination! I guess I was pretty ignorant about this 64 and 32 bit intel stuff. But htere is nothing I want more than an ibook. There is always a need to costomise Windows if tyou don't like it. I tryed Linux out and I love it. I have Windows now because my family depend on my computer for AOL. Thanx agian, I shouldnt have gtten my hopes up!

1 more question? if PPC emulation was possible, would a 533Mhz Celeron, 192 MB SD-RAM with 10BG HD get the job done? or would i need an ad in G3 or G4 card? Or should i post this on e-maculation.com?

sorry to burst your bubble guys, but Dvorak is a bonified idiot. He has no idea what he says. This is the same guy that predicted the extinction of the mac platform by 1999.

There is a .0000001% chance apple will switch to intel.

There is a 99.9999977% chance that apple will switch to the new IBM PowerPC 970 (twice or thrice as fast as current G4)

There is a .0000022% chance apple will stay where they are with current 32-bit architecture.

i don't know about you guys, but if i was going to buy a mac, id get a MAC! Plus, if you're going to spend money changing os's anyway, why not support apple, so they can keep making the awesome stuff they make?

Well, I don't think to many people have IBM PPC, BUT all you have to do is get Mac On LInux. In that case you HAVE to have PPC linux and a IBM PPC processor. I am hoping the next version of Virtual PC will have Mac support, but maybe not sience Microsoft bought Connectix out.

Can't Basilisk II be hacked to take advantage of an add'in card.

Emulatioung OS X is very dangerous. Have heard numerous articals about Kernal Panic, Memory conflict, and Uncompatible Graphics cards.

Basilisk or the Emulator my have to emulate memory if it doesnt already. So... ibox... um... Kinda takes away from the thrill of haveing and accual Apple... Or even your home PC! Sorry!

i agree w/ mr. b. If Apple really knew how many people would like OS X on thier PCs they would make it happen> not a sissy Darwin. I dont know too much about programming (ya, you know that if you read my thread on DiscCopy) but with avery thing thay came up with, couldnt they just rewrite it plus they already have Darwin... All they need is the iApps and the Carbon. I think it would boost thier sales so much.
