Hi! I was just wandering what are the system requirements for avedesk? will it work with windows 98?
Avedesk System Requirements
it wouldn't load for me on win 2000, i'd say forget about 98
Oh yeah, it should work on all versions of Windows. Nothing special, although some RAM for effects is always nice (that's not just AveDesk though, 512 MB is good for all apps).
Edit: Oh...
, I didn't know that Ji. Give it a try, though, it couldn't hurt.
Enjoy AveDesk...I know I do!

it doesn't work on Win98, I've tried it as for win2k I'm not sure at all ![]()
Windows NT/2000/XP/2K3: Runs with Windows 2000 and later.
Windows 95/98/Me: Unsupported.
There is no support for 95/98/ME because of those layered windows which aren't available there. Yes, DesktopX runs on 98 because it draws the entire desktop there on its own without using layered windows but AveDesk won't go backward that far.
For unnoticed CPU usage, it'll need a 2nd generation GFX card (AGP I) with about 16 MB RAM of its own. It kinda sucks on a Pentium II class CPU with 266 MHz; it is reportedly acceptable on a Pentium III class CPU with 600 MHz and more. Beyond 1.5 GHz, it'll appear nailed at 0% CPU usage unless you use a badly programmed desklet/docklet with it.
I'm currently on Windows 2000 Pro on my laptop and I get a dll error. (post the error picture soon)
Thats interesting cause I can compile and run AveDesk on 2000.I'm currently on Windows 2000 Pro on my laptop and I get a dll error. (post the error picture soon)
If I have a lot of shortcuts using Avedesk, does that take up a lot of memory?
As mentioned here is the error message that I am getting;

(no my pc does not look like that...just i put it on 256colour in paint, no graphics programs on here)
Hopefully someone can make sense of that.

First off i have to go to Winnt (windows 2000 pro) instead of WINDOWS, then i have the WinSXS but in there i don't have that folder x86_mic....
I guess i need that for avedesk to run?

yup, that looks like the same error i got on win2000, too.
just a missing dll?
Yes, gdiplus.dll is needed for AveDesk.
Chances are that you have a few of that on your PC, but not reachable by AveDesk, because not on any of the paths given in the PATH environment variable.
Easiest solution - copy one of them to your AveDesk folder.
Get the latest version from Microsoft
Also note that there is this JPeg vulnerability issue with GDI+, which requires you to update it to a fixed version anyway - see Windows Update.
WOOO, thank you very much herd. Downloaded the file unzipped, coppied the .dll file into the avedesk folder...double clicked on avedesk and it works! excellent.

@ Herd: That JPEG-vulnerability really a serious thing? Do you know if that version is included with SP2? Or do I need to d/l separetely?
@TRANS4MER:
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows XP
System Requirements: Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Microsoft Windows® 2000 (Professional or Server), Microsoft Windows NT® version 4.0 (Professional or Server), or Windows 98.

Nah, not even on my system (see specs below in signature),
the real memory consumers IME are stuff like analoge clock, system meters.
Oh yeah, and be sure to turn off the sub labels on your desktop icons (regular label are not a problem, it's the sub labels that measure disk space, etc. that consume alot).
Hope this helps...
P.s: Excusez moi for the double posting
Today, it might not be a serious thing but always remember that the winblast worm peak damage occured months after the vulnerability was disclosed and patched - zillions of people shrugged and got infected.@ Herd: That JPEG-vulnerability really a serious thing? AFAIK this came up after the final release of SP2.
The fact that GDI+ runs on '98 doesn't imply that AveDesk would run there also. The per pixel transparency of AveDesk is based on its usage of so called "layered windows" which were introduced with 2000. Getting AveDesk to run under 2000 is as impossible as running YZ-Shadow, Samurize and RainLendar in transparent mode.

Beter be safe that sorry, ehh? Gues I'd better d/l it. Thanks for the advice.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. I thought it was about getting GDI+ in Win98. So I went to the M$ site mentioned and saw they claimed it could run on Win98. If you know for a fact that that is not the only thing nessecary to run Ave etc., that point taken.
