Hello!
I's like to know if I can remove the area with the task buttons on the Windows taskbar... not just hide it, but remove it completely, allowing for other toolbars or stuff to occupy its place (while still having the Start button and the system tray in place). Is there any way to do this on Windows startup, or even permanently?

As far as I know, that's impossible. Just think about what would be required. I've been proven wrong before though

xBar is what i'm using right now, but it doesn't do what I want... it hides the taskbuttons, but it doesn't free up the area they occupy, and that's what i really need to do.
...and i have to run it manually on startup every time i log on to Windows
you might be able to create your own start button and systray using active desktop, if you so choose.
Just kick everything out of your quicklaunch tray and stretch it across the whole
bar, then click lock bar and your done

Windows won't let me stretch it all the way across, it will keep some place for running tasks.

as abbaZaba said, you might want to have a look at some shell replacements - like geoshell, litestep, blackbox for windows, etc - if I understood you right (two small bars in each corner of your desktop, one with a start menu and/or quick lauch and another with the system tray and/or clock)

I was actually looking for a way to do this specific thing, hide or kill the Windows tasks toolbar... not a way to fake it, as with shell replacements.
This isn't what you're looking for but it might be a half-assed workaround. This program called KSTray lets you minimize straight to the taskbar....

check this out:
The attached 2KB executable will help you somewhat.
It won't remove the coolbar itself (this would crash explorer) but it hides the header controls inside the rebar control, so you could resize the rebar to a minimum and hide it.
Running the app a second time unhides the header control again.
Source included.
Tested with 2000 SP4, XP SP2. Does not work with 95/98/SE/ME.

Why not just use the minimise-to-tray function in WindowBlinds?
