I'm not sure about the resource locations, but it is much easier to simply edit the registry. This VP article gives a very simple explaination for it.

i ran into some problems with the zone icons after sp2. for some reason, the reg trick didn't work for me.

Really? I'm on SP2 and my zone icons kept the changes. Even my custom titles stayed.. well, all of them except "My Computer".
