Invisionboard, Donations & You

A quick update; We haven't upgraded the boards yet, as promised.

Invisionboard released a new version that we wanted to upgrade to, for a better forum experience for each of our members. Then, about a week after the new release, they decided to start charging for their product.

It's not that we don't support capitalism and people making a profit, it's the way that Invision did it that we have an issue with. They stated their board would be free, then deleted every post stating it would be free, decided to charge, then banned any user that asked why they were charging.

Sounds a little goofy if you ask me.

So we're going to move over to VB3 (vBulletin3). If we're going to pay for a forum system, we might as well pay for one Tim trusts.

If you wish to donate for the new board, please do so within the next week. We will be purchasing a 1yr. license, which is $85. If you don't donate, thats ok, Tim, stevie and zombie can pick up the cost if we have to (we will be donating ourselves regardless).

Just wanted to let everyone know where this is at - thanks for your time! :)

Members who have donated. THANK YOU

By the way we are also looking for anyone who is willing to help code/even design some elements of a vBulletin skin. I my self have zero experience in skinning vBulletin, so if anyone has and would like to help, it'd be appreciated. Just send me a pm or bug me on msn.

#217637

Thats really not nice of them. :( I was wondering, would it be possible

to move all the posts here over to the new board, or will we have to

start from scratch ? I would really like to donate, but I dont

have any money at the moment (no job, :sniffsniff:). As for helping

design stuff, Im gonna go bug timmie on msn :)

Gabriel.

P.S.

Sorry I couldnt help. :(

#217640

thats a good question, are we gonna lose everything here?

and paypal hates me, and i hate paypal. if u need it i can send like a money order, ill just need to know were to send it.

#217645

Only thing you'll lose *MAYBE* are a few profile settings, your passwords (you'll have to reset), and maybe some pm's we're still not sure though.

That's pretty cheeky of invision to do announce the charges like that.

Just a thought though, they have an offer of a $40 license for a while. Why not do both A-S and Ae-S on IPB at the same cost as one of the sites on vB?

That way is cheaper and you just keep this board running as normal. Is vB that much better or something?

Well stevie and I had a go around with VB3 and we could really use some of the options that thing has in the admincp, it seems to be much more powerful, and might just fit this community better.

Also we feel that we wouldn't get the most of out it like we would vb3, plus you get a whole lot more than ipb2 has to offer.

Also I might be able to get us some skins, from vbstyles, since I port their ipb skins I can ask if he can let us use the vb ones, I'm sure he wouldn't mind. :).

Plus if we went with ipb, we can't really trust them as much after seeing how they do business.

#217651

What's better about vBulletin? I personally think we should switch to PhpBB ^_^ There are lots of great pre made skins, and for vets like you guys it shouldn't be that hard to skin.

#217652

Timmie, if it makes the admins job easier, I'm all for it. Plus I do agree on the whole not trusting IPB thing. Bring it on!

phpbb is great for smaller forums, but the community asks for too much from something like that, you are very very limited and just hte feel of the bb software is not that great.

I've converted the aquasoft database from this morning, over to vb3, everything looks fine, except for the member groups and permissions which can be fixed, but yes members will have to request a new password, which is actually good, because then later we can prune the member database and get rid of the inactive accounts, something which we could use. Private Messages were saved aswell, I just checked and everything working fine, attachments I can't test will we do it on the aquasoft server.

#217657

does this mean that the vB is already purchased?

vB has not yet been purchased if it was we wouldn't be asking for donations now would we? lol.

#217697

then how can you convert the database?

#217700

why not stick with IB?

#217701

as has been said before, IPB is a lying, cheating snob :)

Hey guys, I'm a VB coder, I used to run a few more boards, but right now all I run is www.hr3rdgen.org, I have been using VBulletin for a long time and helped beta test vb3. I'm pretty knowledged in it if you're looking for help.

Wish I had more examples, right now I'm helping design a new site and forum in vb for a local production company, www.ep-va.com, cuase thier current website blows chunks.

Anyways, just thought I'd mention that I know Vbulletin pretty well.

#217706

By the way, VB is hands down the best forum software out there, it'ss pretty much the industry standard to say??? I mean, it's always been ahead of the pack.

Sure, there is phpbb, and invision board, but none of them have the support and staff behind them that vb does, not to mention the community.

#217707

i really like vB, but i heard that it is very hard to create your own skins and change the code.

It's not, that is a misconception. I've created half a dozen. Just takes basic knowledge of xhtml and some understanding of call functions in php.

Pontiac Style

Basic Style

Generations Style

A mater of fact, copying this board's current style to VB3 would be a very simple task.

#217721

This is absolute bull****. Why should we have to switch over to another BB when Invision said a million times that version 2 would be FREE????? I have half a mind to spam Invision for this. Anybody else with me?

#217723

So it's NOT free? If not, I won't bother skinning it for my site...

#217724

Tim or DZ, send me an IM or PM.
