[help] Windows Xp Sp2 And Avedesk

Hello guys:

I been quite hesitant to install Windows XP SP2 in my computer since I've seen a lot of problems with this intallation update and several programs like DivX and other video codecs.

I was wonder, and probably Andreas know this better, if there is any problem of compatibility between Windows XP SP2 and AveDesk or SysStats.

All this is because I've recieve a lot of mails from ZDnet and others sites about a new problem with .jpeg images and windows XP SP1. These sites recomend the installation of SP2 but others do not...

Can I upgrade my Windows XP to SP2 and still use Avedesk... :(

Thanks...

Ps: What about msstyles... >.<

Yes, I'm using Avedesk right now. As for MSStyles, no problems there either - that's not to say SP2 hasn't been a monumental headache - I wish I hadn't installed it now, there are so many conflicts with my computer!

No problems here.

I slipstreamed SP2 with a copy of a patched SP2 uxtheme.dll onto my WinXP Pro disk a little before it was released publically and did a clean install on my pc. Now I'm using msstyles and Avdesk with no conflicts between programs at all.

What kind of "monumental" headhache?

Well, amongst many many other things - 5 of my most used programs crash on exit (and this is after I uninstalled Dr Divx, disabled DEP, updated all my software, drivers and bios - where an update was available), examples are iTunes, Nero, Trillian. Some crash during use, which they never did before. Before I tweaked the system heavily, explorer crashed on a regular basis.

I can't play games without a crash sometime before the 10 minute mark. I can't play DVD's at all (v. weird). Spamware and adware Pop-ups don't get blocked unless I use the highest setting (which blocks everything)..

Need I go on? You get the picture, Bear in mind that I did a perfect install on a perfectly functioning machine with minimal TSR's and a perfect operational history. SP2, in my mind, being that it introduced no new benefit to me personally at all, sucks royally.

I believe the PC customisations that my unit shipped with may have a hand in it, but regardless, I now see that I rushed into installing SP2 when the main major benefit, IMHO, is the rather weak Anti-Vrius and firewall attempts, which are useless for anyone with good-quality brand-name protection (Norton/McAfee/PC-Cillin/Panda etc.).

pretty 'monumental', huh :)

wow!!... lot of problems indeed... I think I'll better wait for a decent SP release, something like SP10...

Yes...I must add that I'm very reluctant to go for sp2.

Google image search is your friend. :naughty:

Don't know what that has to do with SP2 or AD though...

The only problem I have had with SP2 is that in Zoomplayer Divx movies look scrambled if I have VMR9 mixing on and DEP is on. Other than that it all works fine here . I tend to be lucky though, I guess. ;)

A lot of these problems could be due to the new version of directx released. Almost all those problems could be easily due to that. I used a release candidate of sp2 for months, without the smallest hiccup and i was very pleased with it. But then i slipstream installed it, and had some video game issues (mainly in final fantasy xi) and some video problems where my computer would just randomly restart for no apparent reason. The only big difference I've been able to come up with between the prerelease versions and the final is directx 9.0c. Unfortunately, theres no way to update to sp2 without installing the new directx. I was forced to reinstall because i messed up installing linux, and now it seems to be running fine, although i havent tested it with the game i was having problems with. These problems always seem to occur, but the benefits greatly outweigh the disadvantages in most cases.

As for uxtheme patching, it works fine for me, but i had to manually do it. And avedesk doesnt seem to be affected.
