[question] 12" Ibook G3 Good Enough For Panther ?

Hi guys.

This year I think I might be able to get myself an

ibook G3 from ebay or someplace like that. I just have a

few questions, First of all, I was wondering if a G3 ibook

can run Panther. Ive seen them on ebay and people say

they have panther on them but somehow Im not so sure.

Also, I heard there is a windows XP for macintosh, has

anyone had any experience with this ? Is it really windows

or is it UNIX made to look like luna ?

You can get a good ibook on ebay for 600 $

A G3 should be able to run Panther as long as it is one of the last models (for safety sakes).

And there isn't a Windows XP for Mac's. Only Windows XP being used with Virtual PC and you don't want to be using Virtual PC on a G3 (especially if you have Panther installed).

There is a PowerPC version of NT somewhere but I haven't used it.

I currently run OS X 10.3.5 on my G3 500Mhz iBook.

Runs just fine.

It's a first gen Snow iBook as well... only has 8MB of video memory and 64 MB ram built it. I did have to add a 512MB Memory module to make it usable for large apps, but like I said... it runs just fine.

As for Virtual PC, I run that as well. It's a bit slow, but still very usable.

I was sure there was XP for macs ! I saw it at an apple store and

a few friends here where I live talked about it once. Are you sure

it doesnt exist ?

And do you have a link to some info about this NT thing ?

The only way to get XP to run on a Mac is through Virtual PC or something similar.

At one time, MS released a PPC version of NT 4.0... it sucked and they discontinued it.

What you saw in the Apple store was XP running under Virtual PC in full screen mode.

They do that to let PC owners know that they can still do PC things on a Mac.

i saw those windows xp stuff too. i don't recommend them though. not sure if they can run pc software like normal windows xp, and there might be a lot of problems with it.

because this is a windows xp specifically made for mac, there must be some diffrence like language, etc.

i think he meant safety's sake, as in being careful not purchase one of the G3's with the logic board and other problems which that model was notorious for. anyway, imo, while you can certainly run panther and all the apps you'd want on a G3, i'd bump up the extra couple hundred bucks and go for a G4. you can probably find a used G4 iBook for like 800 bucks already, no?

edit: for that matter, 800 bucks would buy you a brand new eMac keep saving, sez me.

It's all the same code. Virtual PC uses the exact same code as is used on a regular PC desktop.

They sell pre-configured images for use with Virtual PC, but it's still the same code.

I would also go with a G4... on ebay a G4 iBook starts around $800 - $900 for a used one.

While Virtual PC does run on my G3 iBook, it is a bit on the slow side.
