Turning Linux Into X 10.2

I've seen some really great screenshots of customized linux around the forum recently...

and i'm jealous :)

Its much easier skinning for XP than linux even though it doesn't officially have a skinning engine, just because everything is handed to you on a plate.

I think it'd be great if some of those nice screenshots got posted in one place (say here :)) with a little explanation of how it was done (what icons, themes, dependencies etc) and where you might find the different parts.

I didn't a topic like this (tell me if i'm being dumb), i think it would be helpful for existing users and might get a few people interested in proper operating systems :P

inparticular how where did you get your dock for Gnome Grand Masta? does it have proper icon zooming?

I'm just not sure if my PII 266 being kept alive by a house fan is up to all that eye candy *sigh*

I have one question in particular:

In KDE 3 there is the options to have program menus (File, Edit, Help etc) displayed as in MacOS. When i do this I can't seem to integrate that bar with any other bar at the top, so i can't integrate the program menus with a system tray and clock like in Jaguar.

Am i being really stoopid?

yea there is an option to have a mac os like topbar at the top. its in the control panel somewhere but i cant remember at this exact moment.. heheh

I am not sure if what you are asking is possible. In the desktop menu, I think all you can have is file/options/edit, etc. You can't really mix stuff. If you get good, you can make a theme and put that stuff (file, etc) on the child panel and then put all the other stuff on the child panel. You can put all that stuff into a child panel, with no file menu.

PS I am not really trying to get linux to look like OSX, however that said, I do like the aqua style a lot. So a lot of the stuff I use is aqua related. If I wanted to get it to look perfectly like mac, I would either spend a lot of time modding XP (like I have in the past) or buy a mac (like I plan to do in the near future). However, when I get a mac, I will probably be using these awesome Snow e2 aqua icons.

i am very interested in doing aqua on linux. i have done some heavy duty stuff with windows, but i am currently moving more toward linux and mac os because i am becoming quite comfortable with the command line. (once you know how to use a unix command line, you wonder how you ever used a computer without it!)

as much info as people would be willing to post would be awesome. linux is much easier to customize than windows, so when i started looking i was very suprised at how little there was.

MageGuru's Phoenix tutorial works in linux pretty well. Meaning there are a few bugs in Linux.

You know what would be cool? I would like to see other *nix (unix, posix, Linux) desktops. In the monthly desktops, I usually see very few *nix desks. I know quite a few of you are using Open Source OSs, Lets see them. And please explain what you did and how you did it.

I just switched to Mandrake 9.1 with the KDE desktop. If you guys got advice to help make it look like OSX by all means let me know, dont be shy. :)

If you're going to be using KDE have a look around www.kde-look.org

There is an 8 MB png icon pack for use with kde (although i still haven't got it to work properly, how can i get more than 48px icons in the panel?).

If there aren't any OS X themes in the kde3.1 themes section have a look in the 3.0 section. You'll probably want one of the themes based on "liquid."

If you want the panel to look more like the dock you can shrink it by looking the "kde control centre," which should be in the kicker (start) menu. You can also have a child panel at the top of the screen with a taskbar and all the other stuff you don't want in your dock. To create a child panel click go in the control centre again. You can also get MacOS style file, edit, tools etc menus at the top of the screen but i don't know how you can integrate that with the child panel.

If you're using Konqueror as your file manager, you can give it a custom background for every folder somehow. I so you could give it the same background as this forum uses, for example.

Doing all those should make KDE look reasonably mac like. If you want to go further i think you might need to make your own theme. I don't think the Liquid themes look half as good as the ones Iceman made for XP.

Do you mean to PNG or to a KDE icon pack? I received the link to PNG from this very site. From there it is not hard to make your own KDE pack.

Umm, sort of both. It is an archive with lots of pngs, but in the folder named 128, 96, 64 etc and with the index.desktop file. It works fine except that i can't get bigger than size 48 px icons in the dock. Is this a limitation of KDE 3 as all the icons in the pack are also in 128 px size?

After a couple of weeks of using Linux i've decided i much prefer gnome 2.0, which brings me to another problem... *sigh*

I got another nice os X icon pack but for Nautilus in Gnome which also seems to change the desktop icons, which is nice. The problem is, the icon pack didn't have icons for my floppy disk and Zip disk drives. So I have 3 nice aqua icons and 2 little gnome icons on my desktop, which doesn't look all that nice. What i think i need an expert to tell me is where the icons in the pack go once you've installed them, i can't find them anywhere.

Also knowing what i need to call my floppy and Zip pngs would be great but i'm sure i could find it from the other icon themes.
