I would like to have a drive mounted on the desktop, that when opened leads to finder and shows me my server. It would be easier like this because I could save stuff on it w/o saving on my drive then uploading it. I am wondering if MacOSX supports this feature or do I need another application.

not Finder-based, but pretty close, and a great app: Transmit. have you tried it?
Wrong, you could mount it as a drive. Be in Finder, do command-K.
However, you can only read, and not write to FTP from Finder, so much for saving.
can you still download from it?
Yes you can. Google has this info if you search for "FTP finder panther" or similar
