[release] Osx Software Update Dialogues

For those of you who use Windows Automatic Updates (and for those of you looking for an excuse to try it out) here is a small, two file system modification that makes windows update look more like OS X update. I've not seen this in any of the system mod packs that have come out, so I went ahead and made one. I have been going through and adding what has been missing in system mods to complement what is already out there.

These files are for XP Home and XP Pro SP1 English. I have not tried this with SP2.

If you haven't ever updated windows, or haven't updated in a while, do an update first to make sure the auto updater has a chance to make itself current. Don't download sp2 if you haven't already. I do not know if this will work with SP2 (any one willing to try?).

After downloading, just turn off your windows updater or kill it in the taskmanager if its already on (just look for this dll), then drop these files in the system32 folder. They are not protected system files so its no sweat to copy over, but you can use replacer or make a restore point if you want before you do it. It should not cause any problems, though. It is not a file needed for boot up. Anyway, once you copy it over, open your auto updater in the control panel and set the settings to 'Notify me but don't automatically download or install them' and eventually it should pop into your task tray with a balloon if your computer is in need of updates (which, if you don't have sp2, then it should show up). Obviously if you have no updates to do, you will have to wait to see the results until you do.

Both the updater and the control panel mods look their best if you have a Lucida or Mac type font set as your shell font, although this has been tested with Microsoft's default fonts, and it works with them, too. Use this in conjuction with a good Jaguar/Panther/Tiger WindowBlinds skin to get the full effect. Darker windowblind skins will probably not work well with this mod.

The control panel mod is far less a replica of the OS X Sofware Update control display than the dll. It was necessary to make it more of a fusion between XP and OS X, as OS X offers choices XP simply doesn't and vice versa. Dialogs of this nature are never going to be 1:1 perfect.

One final note: a reboot is necessary before you can see any changes.

Very nice! I just turned on semi-automatic updates, but got annoyed when I realize the system tray icon was default windows, and the dialog "Un-Mac-ified." Great timing!

[Edit: I suggest you change the tray icon. Doesn't fit in with other Mac icons. Maybe the crash catcher icon in black and white, or another equivalent Mac icon. The dialog change is great, though!]

P.S: I suggest you try emailing flyakite, and see if you can get this included in his SP2 Update if you plan on making an SP2 mod.

The trouble is, the tray icon comes from the main icon group that the app uses in some of the dialogs. Myself, I use objectbar and can change the icons in the systray, and I have a good black and white update icon. But now you've got me curious. I might take a look and see if I can effect just the resource for the tray icon and get it replaced. If I can get it to work, I'll post an update.
