[help] Finder Windows Within The 'same' Window

I like using the finder without the "toolbar" (cmd+alt+t).

My only problem with this method is that it opens a new window each 'link' within the icon view...

I want to use the finder, with no toolbar, and still be able to browse my contents without opening a new window per 'level' of browsing...

If I browse *with* the 'toolbar', the finder browses within the same window. Without the toolbar it doesn't...

Does anybody know a way to remedy this problem?

I think you'll find this is by design.

As I understand it, Apple wanted to keep the toolbarless finder like the old "spatial finder", and the toolbar'd finder as a "file browser".

As such, without the toolbar, each folder that you open is represented by precisely one window on your system. Every time you move that window, close it, and reopen it, it will open in the place that you moved it to, with the size that you set. This is not true of the toolbar'd finder (if it were, the window would be constantly resizing as you navigated the folders on your system).

Whilst it appears to users such as yourself that the two "modes" are two view modes of the same program - the finder - they are actually two usage modes.

I may be wrong on this, but I'm sure I read that somewhere...

Nope, you're dead right.

However, you can remove all the toolbar items, command-click on the button in the top right of the window (you know, the one to switch from toolbar'd to non-toolbar'd) until the toolbar area is really tiny, then drag the sidebar all the way to the left to hide it. Voila! The functionality you're looking for. If you want to remove the brushed look too, go to unsanity.com and look for their metallifizer haxie.

That makes a lot of sense... Pity the 'Finder' is not as customizable as 'explorer'...
