I Got A Job Offer!

finally, after a few months of searching, i was extended an offer of 50k/yr. with benefits at a mid-sized, but quickly growing b2b strategy consulting firm. i was really excited, but i didn't say yes yet. why? braun consulting, a strategy and tech. consulting firm, signed me up for an office visit in boston. they're flying me there tonight, putting me in a hotel, and then sending me back home tomorrow after my 3 hour interview.

my problem? i need to respond to the first company by monday at the latest, and i hope i'm not making a bad impression by not replying immediately. i need to review my options. but then i hope the second company doesn't view me in a negative light. i mean, they did pay for everything.

plus, i'm still crashing at a friend's place, but he's only subletting, so he has to move out by next week. which means i need my own apartment fast.

You should never weigh your decision on how far an employer is coming your way, since anything can happen. This is business, right? There is no right or wrong in business since there is only money. If employer #2 is paying you flight & night, that should in no way influence your thinking.

Pick the better job out of your belly and don't ever let anyone bribe yourself against your own good.

i know i know. it's just that i'm sort of leaning towards #1 already since it's close, smaller (which i like), and doesn't involve lots of traveling, whereas #2 will probably offer an equivalent salary, but 80% of the time is spent traveling. but the fact that they went so far as to invite me over there must mean that they are at least somewhat entertaining my candidacy. they went through all the trouble, so i should at least be serious about it.

Sounds like a tough decision. On one hand, you have a close-to-home operation as you stated, and on the other a travelling gig. I have no idea on the policy of the second company, but from my personal experience, the travelling gigs can net you some extra bread due to expense cheques and such, but it's nothing life altering or anything, just a few extra cases of beer.

well, here's an update. i signed on with the first company and i got myself a brand new apartment in downtown evanston with a view of lake michigan and downtown chicago. i'm settling in this week and starting work next week, so we'll see how it goes.

lol, thanks, guys.

after the interview in boston, it just didn't feel like the best place to be. and since i don't like traveling much, i don't think i could survive the 80% travel schedule.

now i'm just in the middle of settling in, looking for furniture and whatnot.
