Geforce 6600 Gt.

according to the site tomshardware.com, it showed a benchmark of 6600 gt. dunno if it's accurate, but what do you guys think? thumbs up or down? i think it's really good, becasuse it pushes the competion. i just love it when companies compete, unlike windows that dosen't have any rivels, (i wished there are more OSes)

it showed it's faster than 5950 ultra :blink:

Of course it's faster than the 5950 Ultra - it's the nVidida's mid-range GT card for the 6XXX generation. When they release a 6200 (or something of that ilk), then you can expect to see comparable performance between the old and new generations...

As for TomsHardware, they're usually fairly right about benchmarking, but you may want to check out AnandTech, too.

well, compared to x600 xt, it rocked......hey. is there agp 8x for 6600 gt?

Have you ever thought of Googling?

You do realise, don't you, that Aqua-Soft isn't your personal Q&A forum, don't you?

Lol StevieBM.

Another question: what cool things could these new generation videocards like the Nvidia 6800 or the Ati X800 contribute in terms of technological possibilities in respect to Aqua-modding/desktop enhancing?

Will this deliver faster overall performance alone,

or for instance also more room for details, transparency, shadows,

gellish looking slidebars?

To be honest, they will provide very little, without support for them in whatever renders the UI of your system.

At present, all window-control rendering is done by GDI(+), which doesn't support hardware acceleration, and so all rendering of the UI in windows is not able to take advantage of advanced graphics hardware...

When Avalon or smokescreen arrive, however, it'll be a different matter entirely... ;)

DesktopX, Kaspules, AveDesk, MobyDock and YZ-Dock already profit from HW-Acceleration indirectly, because of their use of Layered Windows with per pixel alpha transparency. While MS states that Layered Windows larger than 200x200 will degrade performance, newer GFX cards have shown the capability to render them faster and larger with each generation.

In the terms of Aqua-Modding, the greatest benefit new cards can show is the more seamless intergration between old school and 3D stuff. If the screen blanks a second when you switch to a DirectX viewport, genie effects and suchlike become meaningless, for example. Cards that manage the switch without visible drops are getting more and more common.

And the new generation cards such as I mentioned earlier are capable of this?

#212814

Yes, definitely.

For example WindowFX transition effects really freeze a second or two on a GeForce MX 2 before rendering while even the Laptop versions of the 3rd generation makes these effects almost usable so I can expect the full blown 4th and 5th generation chips to handle them as intended.

i'm sorry :(

anywaz, i want to discuss the matter of whether i should consider the 6800 normal or the 6600 gt. according to anandtech.com, it showed that the performance is nearly the same, and i'm not sure which one to consider now.

So some general rules of thumb may help you:

Don't buy the newest stuff - it'll trouble - newest hardware means you volunteer for betatest these days.

Don't think a minimal performance plus equals a longer up-to-dateness.

Never buy performance in advance - there is no such thing as hardware that is 'future proof'.

So considering that, go for the 6600.

My recent experiences with nVidia have shown that you can't trust branders like Asus to deliver stable drivers and maintain them over a lengthy period. Go for original nVidia if you can.
