[question] Boot From Floppy To Boot From Cdrom

my sister has an old dell dimension p75t which can't boot from the cdrom. i wanna install linux on it to make it useful but i don't have a way to boot from the cdrom to install SuSE personal edition. i tried extracting the boot image from the live cd (i didn't download the personal edition iso yet mainly because i have like 500 megs of free space) and it didn't even give an error. it just tried booting from the hard disk. i need a boot disk which loads a boot sector from a cdrom and boots from it.

www.bootdisk.com

download a win98 boot disk then when it starts up choose start with cd-rom support.

well i need to boot to a cdrom. if i boot to dos i can't install linux. linux is an os of its own.

It installs cd drivers so you can access the cd drive and run the setup utility

the setup utility isn't compatible with dos. dos is NOT linux! when you boot from the cdrom it boots linux and then runs the setup utility which can only be run from linux itself.

Well it worked fine for me installing fedora core.

And also on that link i gave you earlier is a linux boot disk section.

oh thx. oh and how did you install fedora in dos?

I have no idea. Did pretty much the same as you - installed it on an old P133 where the CDdrive wouldnt let you boot from it, just used the win98 boot disk and ran a setup file. Worked fine. Although it probably shouldn't have!

well after googling for hours i found the official suse 9.1 bootdisks and they don't work! if anyone has a way to boot from the cdrom like have grub load off a floppy and boot from /dev/hdc so it loads the boot image off the cd drive that would work. please if anyone has such a thing post a link.

google for loadlin - loads linux kernels from dos.

However, the SuSe bootdisk images should do the trick (see CD 2).

Loadlin and the disk images maker should be either on CD1 or 2 under folder

well i have the free personal edition cdrom from one of the ftp.suse.com mirrors but loadlin might work. she has win98 so no bootdisk required
