Recommended Programs

Hi,

I would like to know what software to use in aquafying my pc. I've been lurking for a while, and browsing thru the forums, I sometimes stumble on an excellent program mentioned only in that post (rainlendar was the latest I found.)

It would be very nice to have one thread where ALL programs are listed (or one page with links to them) and an excellent spot for newcomers to see what's readily available without having to read all the posts here.

It's frustrating to look for a program, not find it, and then weeks later stumble on a post where a link to the program I was looking for was posted. Everybody would profit from this, as we all would get a heads-up on cool programs. At least we'd get the name of cool programs to check out.

For example, Spidercrab's iTunes skin made me dump winamp in favour of QCD, and there's no way I'd go back, and I found out about rainlendar calendar from one post. Wouldn't it be a cool thing to have one location to find out about all those cool apps?!? I certainly think so.

Here's what I use on my PC running on Xp:

StyleXP - http://www.tgsoft.com

You can get some skins from http://www.desightechnika.com (I think there are some at StudioTwentyEight) Your best bet would be to go to http://www.deskmod.com and sift through their stuff. These are the simple but elegant themes I have installed:

I also use SnowE2 shell.dll from somewhere. I forget where I got it from. You'll have to look through the threads. I decided to go with this so I wouldn't have to run iconpackager from http://www.stardock.com

I use the SnowE2 Icons from http://www.rad-e8.com

xDVD Skin for PowerDVD. It looks great and PowerDVD is awesome. Go through the threads to get the link.

iTunes9Series1-0 for WMPXP - I think I got it at http://www.deskmod.com. This itunes skins is way cool. Unline the iTunes skin for QCD, this one actually aligns the filenames, album names, track time, etc. under the correct columns. But I usually use QCD with the iTunes3 skin.

Samurize - I use samurize for getting PNG images of my harddrives at 96x96 size on my desktop. Get it at http://www.samurize.com

ObjectDock - That's the cool looking docking program at the bottom of the screen that most if not all the screenshots here have. You can get it at http://www.stardock.com

Most of my coolest icons are from http://www.jonmega.com You can go there for the icons and Iceman's shell.dll files among other things...

For a browser, I use the latest build of Phoenix with the SnowE2 skin. You can get Phoenix at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/

I use rainlendar but I guess you have that already.

Some people use hoverweather. Its a skinnable weather program that gets its info from yahoo weather. Its sorta like Rainlendar in that its semi-transparent and sits on your desktop. The picture shown changes according to the weather forecast. The company that made it has taken down the file for download. I don't know if the program can still access info from yahoo or not. But if it does, I'd love to get my hands on a copy of it so I don't have to fool around with samurize to be able to get desktop weather. If anyone here would like to share it with me, I'd be very greatful. I've been doing a search for it for the longest time on Kazaa. No one seems to be sharing it.

As for wallpaper, I use the series that was released by Grusic. I'm tired of all the psychedilic stuff, cars and T&A that I used to have as wallpaper. Besides, I'm I think I'm too old to be having that stuff now on my desktop. I'm still eagerly awaiting Grusic's 2nd series.

I pretty much try to keep the programs used to a minimum so I've stopped using ObjectBar, IconPackager and Windowblinds. But if you want your desktop to look like OS X as close as possible, you'll need to use those programs.

Whew.... hope this helps you out a bunch. I'm new myself at this skinning stuff and I've been lurking around too gathering info. I don't even know how to take a screen shot to I can share my desktop! lolz...
