[help] Wierd Problems With My Pc

Hi guys,

I have this really wierd problem with my PC. It seems

like I have some kind of disk error. I have this file on

me desktop called video.mpg and when I try to do

anything to it, move delete, copy, I get a little windows

that looks like this:

This is not the first time it has happened, and I also have

the problem with other files and folders. I scanned for

viruses and spyware, found a few which were removed.

I also scanned the hdd with CHKDSK /f from the winxp

recovery console twice. Nothing.

I really hope my HD isnt shot cause its almost brand new

(couple months) and I have lots of important files on it.

Can anyone help ?

P.S.

The files arnt being used by any process and

the disk is only 50% full.

Have you tried deleting the file through Safe Mode? or even going into DOS and deleting it from there. (not the command prompt in windows but logging into Command line)

from your desktop, open the command prompt and force delete it. Long time ssince I did this but the command is something like:

cd path\to\file

del \f video.mpg

Deleting it isnt really that important, Im just worried about other data

on my HD, cause it hapens to random files all the time

I had to help a friend remove a load of these 'stuck' files from his desktop once. Damn that was funny!

Try this:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

It'll help you to locate which app blocks what.

It has a DLL mode and handle mode; You'll need the second, then search

fore the file name in question - e.g. both 'mpg' and 'video' would find it.

Also a very useful app to spy on an app about which registry keys, files

and folders it has opened - helped me to get rid of spyware and incomplete

uninstalls, too.

@Ludge : Nope, no porn, but all the files on my PC except my

OS itself are downloaded.

Oh no ! I downloaded the Process explorer onto my desktop, and

when I try to open it it says its an invalid win32 application ! I cant

delete, move, or copy, it either :cry:

As you can see, no processes that use any files, and if there are I can

terminate them and it will still be the same.

There is also another funny problem I noticed. When I try to kill a process

from the command prompt (taskkill /f /im ProcessName.EXE) I get this:

Im beggining to suspect that it has something to do with the NTFS file

system, hence I might not have rights to do something, and the right

to modify / delete certain files. Its also disk-related. Funny thing is it

worked before and since I am an (the) admin it seems kind of wierd.

I have 60 GB of data, 3 blank CDs, and an old 8 GB Hard Drive to

back up onto. Theres nowhere I can backup to !

If only. Do you have a multiple-user setup? It looks like some of these errors are due to permission problems.

and Gabriel (Me, with admin powers of course).

Well, if I remember correctly, there's a way around that hidden part:

1. Log off of the "Gabriel" account (log off, not switch user)

2. At login screen, hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

3. For username type "Administrator" and use the original Administrator password you gave Windows when installing it.

I noticed that it only and always happends when I drag a file/folder

into another folder. If I copy and past everything is ok.

Reason: System modded beyond feasibility.

If Drag'n Drop copy never ends, unwind your modifications to

shell32.dll, sh*.*, explorer.*, reboot and try again.

Better be careful and leave an undo path when you mod your system.

Background: Shell Drag'n Drop is done by an invisible OLE window, whose

implementation is Service-Pack and Windows-Update dependant.

Chances are that the thread that drives OLE/DDE will hang in other apps as well.

Thanks herd, but I just reinstalled windows. Wasted about 50

CDs backing up and still lost halve a terrabyte of data

Well I have an answer for you all for mending faulty hard-drives and it only costs $89 (about £70) its called Spinrite and can be found at this website http://grc.com.

Seriously it is the best, I've been using it on all the computers in my house, and it works on everysingle FileSystem and can be used on empty drives as it includes FreeDos

it can even be used to recover unreadable data

Seriously, try it. You won't regret it.
