Using Netscape and looking for a program or anything that blocks ad banners. Can you suggest anything?

Ad Killers
Pop-up Stopper 2.9 from Panicware. I don't like the new version, 3.0, or 3.1, or whatever in the heck it is.
Windows can do that to some degree in the Security tab, but the problem is that some pages are dependent on cookies and redirects before you get to a site so you may be forced to get a popup in order to get to that site. You may also try disabling Javascript in the browser but again in some cases you will not be able to see your destination page if you block things. This is why Netscape is still a good browser because in a very convenient way you can deactivate Javascript and othe features.
Blocking banners does not speed things up unless you have 28K or 56K connection. Some servers are very slow in delivering the banner holding the whole page from loading so maybe in such a case it may be worth it.
Kinda difficult to get set up and can be kind of intimidating but EXTREMELY powerful. 
I don't mind so much about pop-ups, but for ad banners inside pages. Most of these programs handle popups only.
Dont get rid of Banner ads, they are how Companies support their website. I mean, their not annoying or invasive and they support the website.
pop up cop is good also

where can I get a killer host file?...and wouldn't a large host file slow down you browser?

I thought the hosts file only works for IE... just found out that other browsers use it, too!

And no, I haven't noticed any slowdowns using a large hosts file... (I'm using Opera 7.03).
I use Ad-Subtract. Works very well.
I can't believe no one has mention www.admuncher.com it isn't free though <_< but it is really good cuz not only does it prevent pop-up ads it will prevent BANNER ADS INSIDE the website. Also it has IP scramble.

here is what I call the best mix the MyIE2 free multi tab browser from http://myie2.yeah.net/ (I've used Opera and Avant and other popular browsers and MyIE2 seems to be the best and it is FREE) also it has a built in pop-up blocker and when you mix it in with Ad Muncher from http://www.admuncher.com you now have double protection against pop-ups and blocks even the banner ads in a website and if it misses one it is very simple to add it to the block list, but it does cost money but I say money well spent.( so far on my 56k I have blocked 5mbs (602) worth of ad banners in the past few days and in 56k time that is 30 minutes worth of no crap and extra surfin time

And thats 5MB worth of money your favorite website just lost because you wouldnt look at the 2 in. ad.
Dont worry though, they'll just start charging people, then their financial troubles will be solved.
well why don't you look at this way I either look at the crap I won't click on anyways or I save them the bandwidth for someone who actually cares instead of wasting it on me. Also I am a webmaster and I don't believe in ads, if your going to have a site you should be self supportive you shouldn't have to relay on your visitors to keep the up keep for your own site.
Ads can be a form of art, but most of the time they are there just to spoil a nice scenery. Sometimes it's obvious that the site owner doesn't use ads only to support the site, but as a means to get some extra money. That would be ok, if the result wasn't a "noisy" page, with hard to focus on information, which just leads visitors away from the site.
