[question] How Do I Make Transparent Images?

Hiya everyone,

sorry for posting this here, hope that no one minds too much (I wasnt sure where else to ask, and there seem s to be plenty of techy arty peeps on here! :) )

How do I make a transparent png image?

BasicallyI am playing about with AveDesk at the moment (EXCELLENT app btw) and I am wanting to add just a simple kinda shadow thing at the top of the screen that starts out black (semi transparent) which fades out to reveal the desktop background underneath and any icons that are under it also.

I am using Paint Shop Pro 8 at the moment, have greated a gradient which starts black and fades into the background (the squares thingy). I have tried saving this as a PNG file but it doesnt seem to keep its transparency :(

Do I need to make some kind of mask or something for it to fade through or isnt this possible at all?

Like I said, sorry to ask on here but I couldnt find a better place to ask it!

This is more suited in the Digital Studio.

Masks -> New -> From Image.

check Source Opacity, click OK.

Masks -> Save To Alpha Channel.

Ok, First up..

Sorry about not plonking this in the right place and not shoving the question bit on the front of the subject! (I wil know for the future now! (although its still no excuse!)) :)

I have done as AndreasV suggested by making a mask from the source image and then the 'Save To Alpha Channel' bit which worked. However, when I come to save the image a window pops up saying that the format I am trying to save in does not support alpha c.hannels.

I thought png files supported alpha transparency?

Thanks for the help so far though :) love it when there are great helpul individuals out there like this! :D

*edit*

I have just uploaded the image I am trying to make transparent to my webspace. It is saved in native PaintShopPro format, grab it from:

www.stom.co.uk/images/

If this is easier to do in Photoshop I can try and have a go with that instead? (I can borrow it off a friend Ithink)

Cheers again!
