Is Aqua Dead?

So alot of people have been leaving, or claiming to (taha) and were starting to see lots of non aqua dts and questions. So do you guys think aqua is dead, are you bored of it? I know I am (not that it hasnt been fun). If your bored of Aqua, what theme are you using? I think we should start a section somewhere for talking about non-aqua skinning, since all of us (except me) have great skinning skills, this is still a great place to talk, even though its not about aqua.

What do you guys think?

#17526

i don't think aqua is dead at all, it's just 'cos for skinning it seems that we have almost reached the closest possible, now what i'm waitin' for is the finder shell replacement, all the beta apps we saw going to the end of the developpement.

As you are i sometimes get bored of the aqua gui, so i change to an other nice skin then i come back to aqua, etc... (i know i'm not the only one here).

i'm now using the whole snowE2 look, (which in fact is still close to mac since it was ported from).

actually there is already other threads about other skins than aqua, but it's there should be a section for talkin about this.

...just my opinion...

ieub

Is aqua dead?

Nope. ;)

Hi,

No, I don't think it's dead, it's probably just become stable.

We have all the OS X icons we want now, all the visual styles, the docks, media player skins, browser skins etc etc.

That's not much that we are missing really, except for perhaps a nice Finder, which I'm working on doing up with some Directory Opus mods.

We might not have the assorted utility here and there, but there is usually a Win equal and in some cases a superior anyway.

For the ultimate OS X experience we could, if we liked, work on outfitting the x86 port of Darwin with an Aqua GUI, but I suspect that would take well over a year and a team of highly experienced programmers to implement.

Some group may actually be doing that in secret now for all we know.

Or we could, if we liked, be bold and rob elppA of its own x86 version of OS X. ;) I'm game, although I am in another country half way around the US at the moment.

We could go in Splinter Cell style, all silencers and night vision goggles. elppA wouldn't know what hit 'em!

Ehehehe!

Bling,

Grusic

I cant get past level 2 in Splinter Cell, can we go in C&C Generals style, im good at that game.

Well, it depends on what you mean when you 're referring to "Aqua". It's not just white stripes and candy or glassy buttons; Aqua, when introduced, comprized of window shadows, smooth animations or UI elements, transparencies, genie effects, huge icons etc... some of which we can't live without today!

In my PC (don't own a Mac :( ) I switch from Brushed to Aqua msstyles from time to time, and I guess I'll be using Aqua for a while.

Aqua is mostly white, giving you a similar sense to writing on white paper. White is neutral so the UI doesn't interfere with other elements you're working on, if colour is of some importance to your work, that is.

The major disadvantage of Aqua is brightness; you have to set the brightness and contrast to something comfortable, or switch to a darker theme.

Another rather annoying thing about Aqua is its buttons. They look just "too 3D". Needed some time to get used to them, but I liked the fact that they provide some colour (not much) here and there around your desktop.

I also liked what Apple did on Mac OS X... an Aqua UI with some selected apps in Brushed metal skin. That prevents the user from getting bored with the UI and still avoids the use of colour (Brushed is mostly greyscale) as XP Luna does.

I'd welcome though any skin that is both original and useful. Most skinners aroung here have proved that the can do great things, anyway.

Have a nice day!

Ken

hell no!!!

I'm not planning on going back to Luna too much. and we are far from haveing everything done. sure screenshots are great. i could work up a screen shot with tons of stuff on it and you wouldn't know the difference. but the system preferences app istn' done yet (and thats a big deal) and most importantly, docks are still way off. we have 2 with no sort of taskbar (given, moby kinda does it for ie) and one fairly unstable one that shows all apps, minimized or not, and we certainly dont' have a genie effect!!!

i honestly do not live in aqua. i haven't aquafyed my desktop at work much yet, and i keep a few different log in names in xp. one is pretty much still luna, one is very aqua, and one is kinda half aqua, but still used windows taskbar.

we have alot to do, and i think that aqua is the best interface out right now. what kind of interface are you planning on going to if you quit messing with aqua? going back to windows style, or trying something else?

i do understand how you could get bored with it. most people who do customize their desktops would not use a visual style like that that comes with aqua, but i think a lot of people want to keep the interface and maybe change the style.

Smoothstripes is the best thing since the transistor, believe me.

really i mean that...

nope i don't think aqua-soft is dead,

i have been around sens timdorr's first port of aqua,

it's so many new ppl who want a mac look on there windows,

i don't know if thats great now then elppa have tryd to slow the work down,

BTW: i think we have to do something new,

but i don't know what ( i'm not so very cpu smart, i wish i was)

AND I WANT TO SHOW SOME ,

FOR SOME PPL WHO HAVE DONE SO MUTCH FOR AQUA-SOFT:

jef, Duckie, Timan, DeadZombie, Goku!

THANKS

Peace

Wasn't it Dangeruss who made the first port of Aqua? He made it to WB using the first screenshots of the first DP release by Apple. Then they got mad.

#17582

Im not saying Aqua is bad, not at all. But even the best of things you get bored of. Thats one reason im not getting a mac (at least w/ OS X), because your basically stuck with Aqua, I know you can change stuff, but not like Windows, and I get bored pretty quickly. Id probobly hate aqua if I had a Mac for more than a month.

#17625

I am bored with aqua, the white stripes, but not with aqua, the concept.

I guess its because i made a site, timan was telling me that he got bored of aqua after he made macxp so i guess its some type of aqua syndrome

But right now im using Cappuccino, and i htink everything i skinned is cappuccino now :)

I never said I was leaving Aqua-Soft.. :huh::blink:

#17627

Why not work with Aqua derivatives and really be innovative and creative if you get tired of a specific look? Turn boredom into opportunity to create.

#17629

A whole bunch of people announced they were leaving in a thread, cant remember who started it. The person from i-cons.tk . You said you were leaving, but I guess you were dragged back.

P.S. Taha, your sig and av are all wacked out, I can host it for you, just PM them to me.

We should all get together and create our own theme. We can all skin the program we're good at into this theme (winamp, Docks, etc).

#17647

Yeah it was dangeruss, back in 98 or 99, the skin was called winaqua,

I remember using it in wb in win98se.

#17654

it would be nice if the visually minded community that was have was to create something as intelligent and beautiful as aqua. that way we didn't spend so much bickering over making it pixel for pixel perfect. but i still like my aqua, and i still want to see a good dock, and a good winamp skin, and the system preferences, and i really want to see the finder that is hopefully still being worked on.

#17657

Is Aqua Dead? I guess not! I posted my Crystal theme for Phoenix and there has been 19(?) views - but not a single reply............I guess no one likes Crystal - :(:blink: ( B) )

#17658

Well hey I hope Aqua isnt dead because otherwise everything most people have done here is point less :o

I dont really tend to use the Aqua skin, although when I do switch to it I realise I miss it. At the moment Im using a simple Windows Classic skin which seems pleasing to the eye. But i am still very hyped about anything AQUA :D.

And by the way lynchknot I LOVE Crystal!!! If I wanted to hardcode a theme into my apps it would be Crystal.

#17698

I like crystal too, mmmmm......linux.

#17729

Aqua cannot be killed! Never in my f***ing life time you hear that!?

lol, reading old forum posts, were we? (Y) :own:

Silly question, I think.

Is Aqua dead? Well, it looks to me that for WinXP it's stronger and more alive than ever. After a year of trying to acquire a working dock for WinXP, now I have three to choose from, all with current updates. I have choices of no less than three Finders for WinXP, all in development, Savannah browser, Safari skins, new brushed skins, updated SmoothStripes, iTunes4 QCD skins that knock the socks off anything Ive seen around (with a new update today :woot: ).

Is Aqua dead? After almost a year away from AquaSoft, I return to find a once almost dead site thriving, with a spinoff site - AquaXP (no offense anyone) that is just as strong. We all know iTunes is on the way for Windows, and iPods are compatible with OSX or Windows out of the box...Aqua is growing stronger, and even Apple is taking an unheard of step by porting over new software to us Window users.

If anything, Luna is dead. Longhorn is on the way, msstyles abound, WB4 skins are catching on like wildfire, and Luna can't keep up with OSX's constant Aqua tweaks and updates.

So no, Aqua is not dead, thank you very much for asking.

"It would be nice if the visually minded community that was have was to create something as intelligent and beautiful as aqua. that way we didn't spend so much bickering over making it pixel for pixel perfect."

This I feel is very true. It would be wise of M$ or apple even to pull from the skinning community. Lots of the youngsters in the community make better themes than M$. :rule:
