I was wondering if it is possible to make Windows XP support system icons bigger than 128x128 either by changing the code or by bypassing the usual startup files at all, and if so how to make this perminant (i.e. if you change some settings relating to size this won't cause to stop supporting the bigger than 128x128 size)?

Use litestep or desktop X to display a *.png to whatever size you desire. 
You could take up your whole screen with a hd link if one was so inclined.

I used Samurize to place a PNG on the desktop with the Free HD Space info beneath it. I then placed those PNGs over my original HD icons so that when I clicked the PNGs, those HDs will open. I'm not so sure how to link PNGs in Samurize. I'm a total ****ie at this stuff... Maybe I'll figure it out sometime... or maybe here knows the answer...
To link a PNG you need the newest Serious Samurize (0.85), something I haven't taken the time to download, unfortunately. I'm sure someone else will come along with a better explanation eventually, though.
