What Are The Best Apps Ever Designed?

Hi!

The Brazilian 'Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico' (CNPq) has created an application and a web app, which are called 'CV Lattes', in order to create scientific Resumes/CV.

I wonder how it would be possible to make a better designed application for Windows: the icons used are poor (32x32 and quite ugly) and the design is more or less made with an Outlook left-menu, not bad but not as efficient and pleasant as OS X apps.

If you could please give me suggestions, for example with existing commercial or non commercial applications (on both Windows and Mac OS X platforms) with a really good design, you would help me a lot.

If you wish, you could give also arguments that explain why the application(s) you have chosen is (are) really great.

Thanks a lot for your help and all the best,

donatello.

Have a left or right content menu selection, and have the border between it and the main content more then 1 pixel kinda like mail. Have a navigation toolbar right under your banner / title. Other then that, use your imagination, photoshop, and lots of patterns.

I'm awaiting the release of Delicious Library. The UI-design looks absolutely amazing.

Thanks a lot for the (serious) replies, Flarex and esXXI!

I think I'm going to begin to study the designs of Delicious Library, iTunes and other Mac OS X apps, and the Apple Design guide to build apps for Mac OS X.

Other suggestions are still welcome. I keep my mind fully open!

Thanks again and best regards,

Don.

I think the best suggestions I can give you are; make sure the functionality is simple. Break down what you want it to do and try and link that to objects/scenarios in real life - this helps people understand how to do things a lot faster.

Then try and make any transition of UI fluid, if you have multiple settings-windows or different views of information - try not to make them all too dis-similar, as it can be very confusing.

Lastly, once you've tested (a nice way would be sending the app to some friends and have them time how long it takes to understand what to do/etc), neaten everything up and make it all pretty. :)

Edit: And try to follow the Human Interface Guidelines for your OS.
