UPDATE
All the gadgets from the dashboarder site are zip files and can be unpacked and used in most browsers
right now I am playing TicTacToe
how easy is this to port?
rock on.
Unfortunetly we cant use them in avedesk ![]()
To elaborate: The problem is there is no alpha blending web browser control for avedesk (that we know of), ie one that will show elements of a page but on a layered background. Thus, you cant do it.
this is cool...I might port some...seeing as how they can be done in 2 seconds....
Also you should all realise that none of them (spare the very simple ones) actually work fully.
Snake doesnt work for me, but the Solitaire, Dropper (Tetris), Webcam, and TicTacToe gadgets work and those are more complicated than snake which only uses 2 files to run. I love the NYC Webcams. Especially at this time of day (5:48 AM)
alilm, we could still try, right?
I mean, why not create a skinned transparent png and use the code they provide in the gadgets?
also, why not use this as a template for future AveDesk releases?
that way, when Dashboard is released, we will have the ability to import all of the gadgets.
I agree that porting them one by one by adapting their code isn't the best idea.
The solitaire code refers to a gadget object that is not available in any browsers
object model, some gadgets seem to be dual use by checking 'gadget' availability
and do an alternative rendering for running in a standard browser. I guess this
will be dropped when 10.4 DashBoard is really out. Hence, we can't simply
use the code without touching the environment it runs in.
Also, I agree with Alilm that no browser control is capable of rendering on a
Layered, or even partially transparent window. Therefore, a feasible option
would be to adapt Mozilla's (or any other open source) HTML rendering engine for
layered windows compatibility, extend its object model to a reverse engineered
gadget object and link all that into a desklet. This is the only way I see a desklet
being capable of loading a DashBoard HTML page without alterations; E.g. I can
think of a 100% implementation of Konfabulators object model with its 30 class
interfaces with 500 methods within half a year but coding a full blown HTML engine
with interpreters to handle all the "document.getElementById("why").innerHTML
+= "Foundation " " script code can only be measured in tens of man-years...
However, the following remote possibilites exist, too:
__finally():
Apple has made a brilliant move by enhancing its safari code; this way Apple
has avoided Konfabulator similarity and Windows portability in one go - it couldn't
be worse if intented...
We've already been porting these new gadgets to kapsules, and quite fast as well. Should be available on the site in the next week, along with the new version.
Wow! Thats cool! Ill have to check out kapsules again.
at first glance the gadgets at dashboarder look like, for the most part, pretty much crap.
Just a blind note; anyone who releases ports of Dropper, miniPatience, miniOandX or any other gadgets released by Chris and Me will get a royal beating.
It was also spell the end of any chances of us porting our gadgets (by ourselves) to AveDesk.
@daclothe; Thank you very much.
Addition: I'm not against the idea of Windows users using gadgets, I'm against the idea of people offering ports for download and/or releasing them. The original creators loose credit, or are eclipsed by the port because more people can use it. I'm all for an application/system of emulating .GADGETs on AveDesk.

I hope you don't think I am condoning theft of your work.
I simply thought it was interesting that they work so well, even on a PC and that, given the permission, it would be a nice transition.
having sites like this appearing ths early in the Emulation game is a good sign and could lead to, as you said, porting from gadget to AveDesk.

That settles it, IMHO.

Of course not, you never specifically said that. I'm sure many Gadget creators would be thrilled that Windows users (more specifically AveDesk users) could take advantage of their work. The only worry I have is that if a porting application is introduced, people will set up sites that merely hold the ported work without credit. But apart from than..
Let the Gadget revolution begin. ![]()

Which is EXACTLY why all of the widgets uploaded to the kapsules' website are thoroughly examined and are not approved for download until it is made sure that credit is given for, and permission is recieved to use any work used from another individual ![]()
Hmm, exciting as I think porting user-created Tiger Dashboard widgets may be, I still think that we should first focus on porting the standard set; we don't yet have a working Calculator or Stock Ticker, unfortunately. Admittedly, the Webcam is probably a bit out of our reach for the moment. It would be excellent if we could focus on creating more dashboard-oriented but windows-focused widgets.
Now, I don't want to discourage anyone, and I'm sorry for sounding negative, but I'm just trying to express the direction I hope this stuff will go in. I might even try a hand at it myself... time to go find the AveDesk SDK...

Do you plan on whoring Kapsules in every thread?
Yes, we know about it, some of us (me included) use it, and it has great potential...but geez man, stop stealing the limelight.
How is he stealing the limelight...
This thread is about porting these Gadgets. If it can be done on Kapsules... then I guess problem solved.

1. This subforum has written AveDesk all over it.
2. Duckie has asked for an AveDesk port.

As I said, I have no issues with 'K'. I use it as well and it is a great app.
My point was that it was the third thread I've seen with a mention of that specific software.
To be honest, in hindsight...I don't see why I even took issue with it anymore...
move along, nothing to see here.

Instead of individually porting each widget, how about supporting them through avedesk, so that they all work without any extra coding? Just like objectdock docklets.
