Finder Bar For Avedesk

Hey guys,

Ive found a way in which it might be possible to make a finder bar

in avedesk. You know how avesearch works ? It has the PNG set

to always on top, and it pops up a menu when you click it. I

Thought you could do the same thing for all the different menus

that you want on your bar, and add a customizeable menu to

pop up when you click on it :) Anyway, I know that makes

no sense whatsoever so i made a little pic to demonstrate what

Im talking about. Take a look :

Screenie

Think it would be possible ? :)

The idea is good.

The only issue I find is that of course

the menu item will not change opening

new applications like in the real mac or in objectbar.

Anyway the idea is cool and should be developed

in my opinion.

#202405

Yeah I know but that isnt really that important for most people. :)

#202408

if you're going to make it like that why not do the whole bar?

that way noone has to configure each item individually and it can be made more uniformly for different desktop sizes.

also, for now avedesk doesnt support 'mousedown' so the menus wont hover or change color.

furthermore, you're missing the best part...the menus themselves and how ObjectBar uses the menu for the current app.

#202657

Do you really think that it would be so important to make it use

the menu of the current app ? I dont think many people would

even use it :(

#202668

i think it's needed or it will be not the worth to do that with avedesk , personally i use this function with objectbar

Most people who use ObjectBar do so for the menu enhancement and additions.

With what you're ttalking about, that's just eyecandy and isnt utilitarian nor completely helpful.

Besides, it doesnt stay true to the reality of the OS X experience or feel. You might as well photoshop the finder menu...same effect.

#202796

Yeah, Duckie's right. Menu replacing is one of the coolest ideas in OS X and finderbar without it is pretty pointless IMO.

#202800

I would be curious to know what other uses, if not for menus, you think this would have. It's definately doable for some other widget apps [passes up on shameless plug] but for the sake of keeping the topic on topic, what are your thoughts?

Andrew_, if I got Andreas right, AveDesk was never intended to be a complete

shell replacement and he seems to be unwilling to recreate ObjectDock, ObjectBar

etc. within AveDesk, but with the advent of modules, all these things seem

feasible, including a system tray replacement as a 3rd party addon.

If there were enough coders facing the challenge, AveDesk could become a new

kind of LiteStep even without our intervention.

- Imagine a module that loads other desklets and displays them in a bar. It would

load a number of menu desklets, a tray desklet and the finder bar desklet,

position them as desired and be fully customizable.

- Imagine a module that loads a single task desklet for each task the system is

running. It would display an icon of the app when the app window is visible

and display a thumbnail if it is minimized. It would be capable of catchin dropped

desklets and add them leftmost to its bar. Magnification effects on mouseover

would be really slow unless Moby finds some time.

All this is already possible with 1.1, since Andreas has provided a foundation for

it.

As for your [shameless plug] you shouldn't be advertising Kapsules here anyway.

I take it for granted that anyone can see that the latter is a good Konfab clone,

limited to that goal, while AveDesk is bearing a potential larger than Konfab.

Is that really what the intent of the was to imply? That he wants a shell replacement out of this, or was it some other functionality, thats what Im after.

But the whole point is NOT to use objectbar ! >.<

Well if you saw the screen shot in iFido's post #1, that's the impression you get:

An ObjectBar / Task Bar replacement.

Another use would be, as I said, a tray replacement and a start menu to

complete the ObjectBar replacement. And while doing that, a shell

replacement and a dock follow inevitably - You surely know this type of escalation

strategy from your Kapsules users. Sorry if I skipped a few steps on that thought

chain. I thought it was self evident. I don't see any other functionality - but the

one I see deserves to be analyzed in detail, in my opinion.

...which is specifically WHY I didnt mention it.  :chair: If you would like to debate the merit of informing users of free software, in another thread, I'de be open to that.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

But you already did on another thread I was referring to. :6 I wouldn't go to shellscape

and bring AveDesk into discussion. And I won't discuss 'the merit of informing

users of free software' because I don't see any. Especially not in another thread

on this forum, which is about AveDesk, period.

It could have been worse - I could have been using the same language as Duckie

did.

great.grand.wonderful.

Sorry fido, was trying to help out and get some more ideas out of you, and find out - in your own words - what you really had in mind for this, but I guess since 'the all knowing' have already deemed it unworthy, I cant help.

Anyhow, fire me a PM if you would like to discuss your ideas further. Im giving up on this thread. <_<

#203073

well we cannot obliterate other softs if sometimes its the easiest solution for someone.

I mean advertising for nothing is a thing, bashing another, but when it is with the intent to help someone getting what he wants I dont see why we should bother, after all we are all doing this for free and for fun. ;)

hehe thats the spirit indeed

#203088

Hahahaha ! :D Could you developer doods tell me how hard

it would be to make a toolbar like in Tiger that would use

the current apps menu bar? I think this would be a big hit,

especially as there are non out there except ObjectBar, Which

costs money, is slow, sucks resources, hangs, etc. There is

also winmac, which is verry nice only it doesnt grab the menu

from the current app, and worst of all it is Jaguar style !

Someone, Help !

P.S.

Id do this myself but I dont know any programming langs at

the moment :(

#203090

try this :

it is a finderbar clone ;) (even replicating menus ) and free

http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/index.php?showtopic=14114

tho it is in earlt beta stage so I dont know how well it may work on your system

#203107

I know, McBar is verry nice, except it uses 6 MB OF MEM !!!! and,

the menus only apear when you have some app open, it doesnt

have the finder, file, edit, etc. menus when your just on the desktop,

it just sais program manager, and thats it, :(

#203119

well your idea of one desklet per menu would probably have used 6Mbs anyway, but Andreas may tell if it is possible to do or not tho I looked a bit to the SDK and I dont see if you can have your mouse do other things than click and drop and mouse in out(regular windows actions) (mouse down isnt a function in the SDK if I'm not wrong )

#203121

Well, I'm defenitally not a technical wizz, but from what I've read about it so far is that in M$ windows the true Apple OS X finder experiance in respect to the bar replacing the active menu is not possible at all since windows doesn't use such strict guidelines as apple does.

It has to do with sometimes 'menus' are not menu's but popup/toolbar behaving as menu's. Even MS itself is inconsistent on this. Example in Objectdock MS Word doesn't work, but notepad does. As a matter of fact my Opera-browser also doesn't behave as I want it to with OB. This is because of the principle above, I suspect.

I'd love the menu on bar principle, for one thing it saves up screen-space

:naughty: but it, alas, doesn't seem completely possible on windows.

Besides OB is S L O W & not very responsive on my pc, but that could might as well be the low system specs.

Back to iFido's question:

I like your idea. I would defenitely want someone to create the menu-on-bar principle flawless & consistent, be it Avedesk or another app (MCbar in the future???). And I agree lubner in that (I quote:) the idea is cool and should be developed...whish you good luck, ifido!

greets,

WiebeesT

in my opinion.
