Simple solution:

Try running iMovie on its own without any other program running but the Finder. It may be that another program you have open is interfering with iMovie.

Other solutions:

I would try reinstalling iMovie from your PowerBook's System Software discs, but when it comes to installing, tick off BSD System and the main system software, and the rest except for iMovie, so it only reinstalls iMovie. (I recall thats how you do it).

If that doesn't work, try performing a permissions repair on your drive with the 'Disk Utility' program found in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, and then select your drive on the left hand side bar and click 'Repair permissions'.

If this doesn't work, then try reinstalling Mac OS X itself from your PowerBook's System Software discs. This will take from 20minutes to an hour or so depending on installation options.
