Os X Newbie Questions

Hi boys,

I finally switched last weekend!! :D I bought an incredible 15'' iMac and I'm in love with it :lol:

I'm amazed by the easy of use of OS X, but I've been using Windows for years and I have some questions:

1) I know how to take a screenshot (apple+shift+3/4) but I get a pdf file, how can I choose the file type (jpg, png or gif)? should I use an extra app for that?

2) How do I uninstall a program?

3) Can I use png's icons in the dock, folders, etc?

4) How should I change the icons in dock, folders, etc?

Well, anything else at the moment, I'll have more questions in the future so... I'll ask again

CONGRATS MAN!! Enoy your new mac :)

1)You can double click and it will open in Preview. From here you can export it in any format. OR, yo can drop it into the DropJPEG Icon in your dock. YOu can get DropJPEG from Versiontracker.com

2) Delete the file. :) Thats it. Hotkey=applekey(command)+delete.

3) You can't use png's. You can only use icns. However you can use a program called pic2icon. Drag the png into it. Now go to the png's properties (command+I). click on the icon. It will have a hzy glow around it. press Ctrl+c. now go to the app whose icon you want replaced. Again Ctrl+I. Click on its icon preview. Ctrl+V to paste the icon. Now add the app to the dock. OR you can juust use CandyBar ;)

Again, enjoy your mac :). At first you might feel a little frustrated because its so different. But in about 2-3 weeks you'll get accustomed to it.

Tips:

For good mac health, use MacJanitor

For movies, use VLC

For a kazaa replacement, use Acquisition

For defragging, use Drive 10

All files can be found at http://versiontracker.com

Edit: damn, so many smilies...

also, get a two-button mouse! The apple mouse is beautiful, but really not the most useful. Get a Kensington promouse if you want a very beautiful mouse..

Will this delete system files and everything? (windows-minded)

I understand that draging the app to the bin will have the same effect, right?

thanks

ehehe, i have a question about getting around an administrative lock:

anybody know how to get around acces protections ??:ph34r:

because we have 2 15" Imacs at our school, and two new 1ghz g4's with the studio display, and EVERYTHING is locked, except the iMovie 3 program. its really annoying because i can only look, AT IMOVIE and i want to explore.

so any creative ideas??

i have tried many things, but they dont work, i suppose they arent supposed to :P

#1 YOU LUCKY BASTARD!! :angry::P

#2 Click the folder/drive you want to become the owner of and press command+I

#3 Go to the Permissions area and click the lock button.

#4 If you have the Admin password, enter it. Otherwise, Forget the whole thing

#5 If you knew the password, now select who you want to be the owner of the folder/drive

#5 Now you have full control!

Of course.. I don't think you have the Admin password ;). So I guess you'll have to get your own mac :D

Apple is also smarter than Microsoft. If Microsoft got rid of the registry, Windows would run more stable, CLEANER, FASTER, and so many things that Mac users only understand.

But Im stuck with my Windows Box :(

#17285

aw man.

actually taha, i have found a temporary workaround to it.

and no i dont have the admin password or i wouldnt be asking these questions now would i?

ok, want the temporary workaround??

here goes:

you need one of those studio displays, the ones wehre you can hit the power button on the monitor, and on the left there is a settings button, push it.

and up come the settings :P not accessible usually, but i am smart and figured it out. then, you go to login items, and pick the apps you want to open when the comp starts up.

then, you exit the prefs, nothing will happen until an admin logs into his account and you log back in yours after him(or in my case, iwould have to wait a day till i went back to class to do it). and when you login, SHIBBY!! the apps you selected start up.

and i KNOW this works, becuase i did it with 2 things just to test it.

i selected itunes and iphoto. first i tried itunes and waited a day and did iphoto after. and IT WORKS!!!

and so far thats the only way i have figured out around it.

I'm trying to change the awful green and blue msn messenger icon, I've followed this instructions, but the icon doesn't change, I've managed to change the icon of any folder, but I can't change the msn app icon. Why? Maybe the access properties (read-only, etc)? I'm the admin so: what's the problem?

Another question, is there any IM app that can handle the msn protocol? msn is really awful in comparision with the rest of the apps and OS. ;)

And suddenly I remember...

I had the exact same problem too. With MSN only :)

You know how I fixed it? MAke a copy of MSN in the same folder and change the icon of the copy. Now delete the original and rename the copy. Hope it works..

And Idunno why, but I had this problem with MSN only.. <_<

#17464

thanks, it worked, but when I launch the app, the f*ck*ng blue icon appears in the right part of the dock...

forget it, doesn't matter... thanks for the help

LOL

Drag it to the desired position. Then right-click or cmd-click and select keep in dock. That should do it..

#17480

Any time dud ;)

#17482

it finally worked  thanks man... but I have another question

I want to copy the Office XP cd (for windows, not office v.X) with the iMac, I'm using Disk Copy and it works, but when I insert the CD in a windows box, it can't read it!! ;) no rest for you boys

#17487

Use Toast Titanium to burn the CD. Burn it in PC/Mac Hybrid format. that way, it will be readable on PC's..

#17491

there's no way to do it without installing another app? just curious

#17496

nope :(

Just like you can't burn a mac cd on a pc, you can't do it the other way around.

Although, there are a few files that are readable on either platform..

#17498

This seems to be a stupid question, but how can i take a screenshot with the cursor?

edit: using 10.2.4

you need a 3rd party app. Look for one on http://versiontracker.com

also, check out Grab.app in the Application>Utilities folder. Maybe it also has the feature..

#19012

is there an easy way to restore the default icons?
