[request] Cross-protocol Im Software

alo,

is there such a thing as cross-protocol im software?

let me start from the beginning... i have trillian pro with contacts whom use 4 out of the 5 available protocols (aim, icq, msn, yahoo)... i only have an aim account... thus the contacts whom use the other 3 protocols don't show online since i haven't connected to those 3 with an account.

what i'm looking for (if it exists) is an im software that would fulfill my type of situation. connect with aim, but able to add and communicate seamlessly with the other types of im protocols.

i would rather not have to go through and register for 4 different accounts, i just want my one.

thanks much

I may be wrong but I believe that's not yet possible though the recent talks between MS, AOL, and Yahoo! might make it possible in the future.

Jabber can do something called "Transports". Basically, a Jabber Server (jabber is open, unlike the other protocols, so anyone can run their own server) acts as a converter from Jabber to any of the other major protocols.

So basically, you could connect with a Jabber client (loads of them), and you would be able to see and talk to all your AIM/MSN/YAHOO/ETC buddies.

You'd have to find a server that offers transports for the protocols you want. Not all of them do, as there are legal issues (illegal to use the closed protocols on unofficial clients). I don't know any off hand (try the jabber.org server first though), because I just use GAIM with multiple accounts.
